Build a Compound Fixed Asset from Component Assets in NetSuite FAM

Group existing NetSuite FAM assets under one compound asset with Build Compound Asset, see why a component with a different Asset Type is refused, and check the rolled-up cost, the Components subtab and each component's Component Of.

The quick answer

Go to Fixed Assets > Lists > Build Compound Asset. Enter the compound's Asset Name and choose its Asset Type, Accounting Method and Subsidiary. In the Components sublist, select each existing FAM asset in ID/Name and click Add. Leave Asset Cost and Current Cost empty: they add up from the components. Every component has to share the compound's Asset Type, Subsidiary and Accounting Method, and NetSuite refuses one that doesn't. Click Build, then refresh FAM Process Status until the Build Compound Asset process is Completed and check its Details for errors. The new compound asset lists its parts on the Components subtab, and each part shows the compound in Component Of.

The screenshots show sample data. The company, user and asset names are fictional. Use your own assets when following the steps.

Before you start

Ridgeway Cold Brew Co. installed a new canning line at its Oregon plant. The line arrived as separate pieces of equipment, and each piece is already a FAM asset in the Ridgeway Cold Brew Co. : Oregon subsidiary: a filler at 18,500.00, a seamer at 9,200.00 and a conveyor at 4,300.00. All three are Asset Type Production Equipment, Straight Line over 84 months from 11/01/2026, and still New. The line's label printer, 2,600.00, was set up as Computer Equipment. Finance wants to see the line as one asset, and each piece should keep its own record and depreciation.

You need Fixed Assets Management installed and a role that can view FAM assets and run Build Compound Asset. Menus and permissions vary by role and FAM version, so test with the role that will do the work. A component must have the same Asset Type, Subsidiary and Accounting Method as the compound, and its status must be New, Depreciating or Partially Disposed. Fully depreciated and disposed assets can't be components, and an asset can only be a component of one compound at a time. Decide those three values for the compound before you start, because they decide which assets you can add.

01. Review the assets that make up the line

Go to Fixed Assets > Lists > Assets. On the FAM Asset List, FAM000052 Canning Line - Filler, FAM000053 Canning Line - Seamer and FAM000054 Canning Line - Conveyor are Production Equipment, Straight Line, lifetime 84 and status New. FAM000055 Canning Line - Label Printer is Computer Equipment. The Component Of column is empty on every row.

Three canning line assets are Production Equipment. The label printer is Computer Equipment.

02. Start the compound on Build Compound Asset

Go to Fixed Assets > Lists > Build Compound Asset. In Asset Name, enter Canning Line 1. Set Asset Type to Production Equipment, Accounting Method to Straight Line and Subsidiary to Ridgeway Cold Brew Co. : Oregon. Leave Asset Cost and Current Cost empty; the components fill them.

The header is set and Asset Cost and Current Cost are still empty.

03. Add the components

In the Components sublist, select FAM000052 Canning Line - Filler in ID/Name. The line fills with Asset Life 84, Original Cost and Current Cost 18,500.00, Quantity 1 and Status New. Click Add. Asset Cost and Current Cost in the header become 18,500.00.

After the filler is added, Asset Cost and Current Cost show 18,500.00.

Now select FAM000055 Canning Line - Label Printer and click Add. NetSuite shows "The component should have the same Asset Type as the compound asset." The label printer is Computer Equipment and the compound is Production Equipment, so the line isn't added. Click OK.

The label printer is refused because its Asset Type doesn't match the compound's.

On the same line, select FAM000053 Canning Line - Seamer instead and click Add. Asset Cost and Current Cost become 27,700.00. Then select FAM000054 Canning Line - Conveyor and click Add. They become 32,000.00, which is 18,500.00 plus 9,200.00 plus 4,300.00.

With all three components added, Asset Cost and Current Cost are 32,000.00.

If the label printer really belongs in the compound, fix its classification first. Fixed Assets > Transactions > Asset Transfer can change an asset's type. An asset type transfer moves the asset to the new type's accounts and useful life and can create catch-up depreciation, so review the asset afterwards. Don't just edit the Asset Type field on the asset.

04. Build and follow the process

Click Build. NetSuite opens FAM Process Status with Build Compound Asset process 6127 at the top, status Queued. Click Refresh until the status is Completed.

Process 6127, Build Compound Asset, is Completed.

Click Details on that row. The single stage, 1/1 Build Compound Asset, is Completed with the message Component assets updated: 3, and the Errors column is empty.

One stage, three component assets updated, no errors.

05. Check the compound asset

Go to Fixed Assets > Lists > Assets and click View on FAM000056 Canning Line 1. Asset Original Cost, Asset Current Cost and Current Net Book Value are 32,000.00, Cumulative Depreciation is 0.00 and Asset Status is New. The asset number comes from your account's numbering, so yours will differ.

The compound asset carries the components' combined 32,000.00.

Click the Components subtab. The FAM Asset list shows FAM000052, FAM000053 and FAM000054 with Asset Original Cost 18,500.00, 9,200.00 and 4,300.00, Straight Line, lifetime 84 and status New.

The Components subtab lists the three assets that make up Canning Line 1.

Click the General subtab. Depreciation Start Date is 11/01/2026 and Depreciation End Date is 10/31/2033. The compound takes its dates from its components, and here all three share the same start date and life. In this example Depreciation Active is False: the components keep depreciating as individual assets, and the compound doesn't get a depreciation journal of its own.

Depreciation Active is False on the compound. Its components depreciate.

06. Confirm the components on the asset list

Go back to Fixed Assets > Lists > Assets. FAM000052, FAM000053 and FAM000054 now show Component Of FAM000056, and FAM000056 Canning Line 1 is listed at 32,000.00. FAM000055 Canning Line - Label Printer still has an empty Component Of. It stays a standalone asset.

The three components point to FAM000056. The label printer stays standalone.

Check the result

  1. Build Compound Asset is Completed on FAM Process Status, and its Details show Component assets updated: 3 with no errors.
  2. FAM000056 Canning Line 1 shows Asset Original Cost, Asset Current Cost and Current Net Book Value 32,000.00.
  3. Its Components subtab lists FAM000052, FAM000053 and FAM000054.
  4. Those three assets show Component Of FAM000056 on the FAM Asset List.
  5. FAM000055 has no Component Of.

Building the compound doesn't post a journal by itself. Each component keeps its own record and depreciation history. When depreciation runs, FAM calculates it for the components, and any journals belong to the components, not the compound. For the monthly run and its journal, see how to run fixed asset depreciation and check the journal.

A compound asset isn't the same as a parent asset on the Sub-Assets subtab. A sub-asset doesn't have to share the parent's Asset Type, Subsidiary and Accounting Method, and its cost doesn't roll up into one compound value.

Common questions

Why can't I add an asset as a component of a compound asset?

The asset has to match the compound's Asset Type, Subsidiary and Accounting Method, and its status has to be New, Depreciating or Partially Disposed. Fully depreciated and disposed assets can't be added. Here the label printer was refused because it's Computer Equipment and the compound is Production Equipment.

What does "The component should have the same Asset Type as the compound asset" mean?

The asset you picked has a different Asset Type from the one in the compound's header. NetSuite doesn't add the line. Either pick a matching asset, or correct the asset's type with an Asset Transfer before you build.

Do compound asset components need the same subsidiary and accounting method?

Yes. Components must share the compound's Subsidiary, Asset Type and Accounting Method. In this example all three components were in the same Oregon subsidiary, Production Equipment and Straight Line.

Do I enter Asset Cost and Current Cost on Build Compound Asset?

No. Leave them empty and add the components. Each Add updates the header, and here both fields reached 32,000.00, the total of the three components.

Does a compound asset depreciate, or do its components?

The components do. Each one keeps its own depreciation history, and depreciation journals belong to the components. The compound shows their combined cost and book value. In this example the new compound showed Depreciation Active False and Cumulative Depreciation 0.00.

Does building a compound asset post a journal entry?

No. The build creates the compound asset and links the components to it, and nothing posts to the general ledger. Journals come later, when depreciation runs on the components.

How do I see which assets belong to a compound asset?

Open the compound and click the Components subtab, which lists its component assets. Each component also shows the compound in its Component Of field, and the FAM Asset List has a Component Of column. Here the filler, seamer and conveyor each showed FAM000056.

What's the difference between a compound asset and a sub-asset in FAM?

A compound's components must share its Asset Type, Subsidiary and Accounting Method, and their cost rolls up into the compound. A parent asset with sub-assets doesn't have those matching rules, and the sub-assets don't roll up into one compound value. Use sub-assets when the pieces should stay separate for accounting.
