How to Change a Revenue Arrangement Date and Move Its Revenue Plan in NetSuite

A subscription starts a month late and nothing is recognized yet. Change the Date on the revenue arrangement, run Update Revenue Plans, and check that the same plan now starts a month later.

The quick answer

Open the revenue arrangement, click Edit, and change Date. Click Save. If your account updates revenue plans manually, run Update Revenue Plans and wait until every submission reads Complete. A plan that takes its start date from the arrangement and hasn't started recognizing revenue moves with it. Here the plan went from 10/1/2026 to 11/1/2026, and its twelve planned lines shifted one month. Once any revenue has been recognized on a plan, this doesn't work.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.

Before you start

The plan only follows the arrangement when its Revenue Recognition Start Date Source is Arrangement Transaction Date. That field is on the plan, and the plan copies it from the revenue recognition rule, so you can check it without opening the rule. If the source is something else, such as the source transaction or a date you entered, changing the arrangement Date won't move the plan.

The other condition is that recognition hasn't begun. In this example the plan is Not Started, Total Recognized is 0.00, and no planned line has a journal or a Date Executed. Once revenue is recognized on a plan, a change to the arrangement Date doesn't move that plan's start date or the periods already recognized. Fixing a plan that has started takes a different process, and this guide doesn't cover it.

You need Advanced Revenue Management and a role that can edit revenue arrangements. To get the same twelve lines of 250.00, the rule also needs a 12-month term (Term in Months as the end date source) and a straight-line, even-periods recognition method, and the accounting periods for the new range have to exist. This account has Revenue Plan Update Frequency set to Manual, so you have to run the update yourself. If yours is Automatic, a background process updates plans on a schedule, roughly every three hours, so the plan can lag the save for a while. Menu paths below are the ones in this account. If a page isn't where it says, search for its name in global search.

01. Open the arrangement from the sales order

Cedar Ridge Clinics' annual subscription will now start on 11/1/2026 instead of 10/1/2026. Open the source sales order, here SO5186, and click the Related Records subtab. The Revenue Arrangement row shows RA1047. Click its Date link to open the arrangement.

On SO5186, the Revenue Arrangement row for RA1047. Its Date link opens the arrangement.

02. Check the plan before the change

RA1047 is dated 10/1/2026 for a Total Revenue Amount of 3,000.00, and its Revenue Plan Status is Not Started. Click View Revenue Plans to open the actual plan.

RA1047 is dated 10/1/2026 and its Revenue Plan Status is Not Started.

The plan is RRPL002318. Revenue Recognition Start Date Source reads Arrangement Transaction Date and Revenue Term in Months is 12, so the plan runs twelve months from the arrangement date. Rev Rec Start Date is 10/1/2026 and Rev Rec End Date is 9/30/2027. Status is Not Started and Total Recognized is 0.00.

The plan starts 10/1/2026 because its start date source is Arrangement Transaction Date.

Scroll down to Planned Revenue. It lists twelve lines of 250.00, which is 3,000.00 divided by 12, from Oct 2026 to Sep 2027. Journal and Date Executed are empty on every line, so nothing has been recognized.

Twelve planned lines of 250.00, Oct 2026 to Sep 2027, none with a journal.

03. Change the arrangement Date

Click Back to return to RA1047, then click Edit. Revenue Arrangement # shows RA1047 as plain text. It's auto-generated, so you can't change it here, and you don't need to. Date is required and editable. Replace 10/1/2026 with 11/1/2026.

Date is set to 11/1/2026. Revenue Arrangement # stays read-only.

04. Save the arrangement

Click Save. RA1047 now shows Date 11/1/2026. Saving doesn't recalculate the plan. The new date reaches it only when revenue plans are updated.

RA1047 saved with Date 11/1/2026.

05. Update the revenue plans

Go to Transactions > Financial > Update Revenue Arrangements and Revenue Recognition Plans and click Update Revenue Plans, not Update Revenue Arrangements. In this account NetSuite adds three submissions, and they start as Pending at 0.0%. You don't need Update Revenue Arrangements here, because the arrangement and its elements didn't change, only the date.

Click Update Revenue Plans. The three submissions start as Pending.

Click Refresh until each submission reads Complete. Here all three show 100.0% and 0 Errors. How many submissions you get depends on your setup, for example whether forecast plans are in use and which accounting books apply, so watch for Complete and zero errors rather than a count of three. If a submission shows an error, fix that before you check the plan.

After Refresh, all three submissions are Complete with 0 Errors.

06. Confirm the plan moved

Go to Lists > Accounting > Revenue Recognition Plans. Scroll the list to the right to see Rev Rec Start Date and Rev Rec End Date. The RRPL002318 row already shows 11/1/2026 and 10/31/2027.

The RRPL002318 row shows Rev Rec Start Date 11/1/2026.

Click View to open it. It's the same plan, RRPL002318, not a new one, and there's still only one actual plan for this element. That's what happens here because nothing was recognized and the rule didn't change. Other changes to an arrangement can create a new plan instead. Rev Rec Start Date is 11/1/2026 and Rev Rec End Date is 10/31/2027. Status is still Not Started and Total Recognized is still 0.00.

RRPL002318 starts 11/1/2026 and ends 10/31/2027.

Check the result

  1. Rev Rec Start Date is 11/1/2026 and Rev Rec End Date is 10/31/2027, on the same plan number.
  2. Status is still Not Started and Total Recognized is 0.00.
  3. Planned Revenue lists twelve lines of 250.00 from Nov 2026 to Oct 2027, with no Oct 2026 line.

The Planned Revenue subtab confirms it. The lines run from Nov 2026 to Oct 2027, twelve at 250.00, and the Oct 2026 line is gone.

Twelve lines of 250.00, Nov 2026 to Oct 2027.

The number of lines follows your accounting calendar. This example starts on the first of the month, so twelve months give twelve lines. A start in the middle of a month can span 13 periods. Run this check before the next journal creation run, because that run books revenue by the periods on the plan.

Common questions

Why didn't my revenue plan start date change when I edited the revenue arrangement?

Saving the arrangement doesn't recalculate its plans. If Revenue Plan Update Frequency is Manual, run Update Revenue Plans and wait for the submissions to read Complete. If it's Automatic, a background process picks up the change on a schedule. The plan also has to take its start date from the arrangement, and nothing can have been recognized on it yet.

What does Arrangement Transaction Date mean on a revenue recognition rule?

It's a Rev Rec Start Date Source setting. It tells the plan to start on the Date of the revenue arrangement. The plan copies the setting into its Revenue Recognition Start Date Source field, so you can check it on the plan without opening the rule.

Can I change a revenue plan start date after revenue recognition has begun?

Not by changing the arrangement Date. Once revenue has been recognized on a plan, the plan keeps its start date and the periods already recognized. Correcting a plan that has already started takes a different process.

Does the forecast plan move too?

In this example it did. The Revenue Recognition Plans list shows the Forecast plan RRPL002319 with the same 11/1/2026 start and 10/31/2027 end as the Actual plan. The two plans are separate records, so check each one in your account. A forecast plan moves only if it uses the arrangement date and is eligible for the update.

How long does Automatic updating take?

NetSuite updates plans in the background about every three hours, so don't expect the plan to change right after you save. Check the plan again before the next journal run.

Why can't I edit the Revenue Arrangement # field?

The number is auto-generated, so it's read-only in edit mode. You don't need to change it to move the plan. If you do want to override numbers, check Allow Override for Revenue Arrangement on the Document Numbers subtab of Setup > Company > Auto-Generated Numbers.

Which revenue arrangement header fields can I edit in NetSuite ARM?

Date is required and editable, which is the field this guide changes. Depending on your features and form, you may also be able to edit Compliant, Transaction Is Allocation Bundle, and Memo. Clearing Compliant allows reallocation, and Transaction Is Allocation Bundle must also be checked. With Advanced Cost Amortization, the contract acquisition cost fields and Contract Cost Accrual Date are editable too.

What does the arrangement Date default to on a new arrangement?

The source transaction date or the system date, depending on the accounting preference Use Transaction Date as Revenue Arrangement Date.
