Raise Item Prices by a Percentage in NetSuite with Update Prices

Use Lists > Mass Update > Update Prices to raise List Price 8% on one class of items, round to whole dollars, preview old and new prices, then check that discount price levels followed.

The quick answer

Go to Lists > Mass Update > Update Prices. Give the update a title, enter the change in Amount (for example 8%), leave Based on as Existing Price, select the Price Levels to change, and pick a Rounding rule. On the Criteria subtab, choose which items to update, such as Class is any of Camp Kitchen. Click Preview to see every item's Base Price next to its New Base Price, then click Perform Update. There's no undo, so read the preview first.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and company names are fictional. Use your own items, price levels, and criteria when following the steps.

Before you start

This example uses Ridgeway Trail Supply. Its supplier raised costs on the Camp Kitchen class, so the five items in that class need an 8% increase on List Price, rounded to the nearest whole dollar. Two Shelter items must not change.

You need a role with the Mass Updates permission and permission to edit items. The Administrator role has both. Price levels need the Multiple Prices feature (Setup > Company > Enable Features). This account has four: List Price, Online Price, Outfitter (-12%), and Wholesale (-25%). List Price is the account's base price level, which is why the Items list and the preview call its value Base Price.

A price mass update writes straight to the item records and can't be undone. Read the preview row by row before you run it, and check a few items afterward.

01. Check the current prices

Go to Lists > Accounting > Items. The Base Price column shows the five Camp Kitchen items at 84.00, 62.00, 129.00, 38.75 and 54.00. SH-110 Dome Tent 4P (189.00) and SH-130 Tarp Shelter (46.50) are in the Shelter class and aren't part of this change.

Base prices before the update.

Click CK-210 Two-Burner Camp Stove and open the Sales / Pricing subtab. In the US Dollar pricing matrix, List Price is 84.00 and Online Price is 79.00. Outfitter (-12%) is 73.92 and Wholesale (-25%) is 63.00, and both show a Default Discount % of -12.0% and -25.0%. Those two levels are calculated from List Price. Online Price has no discount; someone entered it by hand.

CK-210: two levels calculated from List Price, one entered by hand.

That difference decides what happens later. Here, the levels with a Default Discount % are recalculated from the new base price. Levels entered by hand stay put unless you select them in the update.

02. Set up the price rule

Go to Lists > Mass Update > Update Prices.

Lists > Mass Update > Update Prices.

The Mass Update page opens with Type Item. Fill in the header:

  1. Replace Title of Action with Camp Kitchen price increase.
  2. In Amount, type 8%. The percent sign matters. A plain 8 adds 8.00 to every price instead.
  3. Leave Based on as Existing Price, so the new price starts from the current one.
  4. Leave Price Levels on List Price only.
  5. Set Rounding to To Nearest and keep Round To on Whole Number.
The price rule: 8% on List Price, rounded to whole dollars.

To Nearest turns 90.72 into 91 and 139.32 into 139. Round Up would make 139.32 into 140.

03. Choose the items

On the Criteria subtab, choose Class in Filter. In the popup, select Camp Kitchen and click Set.

Select Camp Kitchen, then Set.

Click Add. The row reads Class is any of Camp Kitchen. If one class mixes item types and you only want one type, add a Type criterion too.

Only Camp Kitchen items will be updated.

04. Preview and perform the update

Click Preview. Mass Update Preview Results shows Total: 5, one row per Camp Kitchen item, each with Apply checked. Base Price and New Base Price read 84.00 to 91, 62.00 to 67, 129.00 to 139, 38.75 to 42, and 54.00 to 58. Each is the old price plus 8%, rounded to the nearest dollar. The Shelter items aren't listed.

Preview: nothing has changed yet.

Check that the list holds exactly the items you meant, and clear Apply on any row you want to leave out. Nothing is written until the next click.

Click Perform Update. Mass Update Performed reports that the update was successfully performed on 5 records. A big update may show Mass Update In Progress first; click Refresh until it finishes. Click OK.

Performed on 5 records.

05. Confirm the new prices

Go back to Lists > Accounting > Items. The Camp Kitchen base prices are now 91.00, 67.00, 139.00, 42.00 and 58.00, matching the preview. SH-110 and SH-130 are still 189.00 and 46.50.

New base prices; the Shelter items are unchanged.

Open CK-210 Two-Burner Camp Stove and its Sales / Pricing subtab again.

CK-210 after the update.

Check the result

  1. List Price is 91.00, the previewed value.
  2. Outfitter (-12%) is 80.08 and Wholesale (-25%) is 68.25, recalculated from the new List Price.
  3. Online Price is still 79.00 because it was entered by hand and wasn't selected.

Check the discount levels on a few items after any price update. If an item carries a hand-entered price on a discount level, that price doesn't follow the base price.

Common questions

Can I undo a mass price update?

No. Update Prices has no undo, so read the preview before you click Perform Update. If you might need the old prices back, export them first, for example from an item search with the price levels you're changing.

How do I lower prices for a sale?

Enter a negative amount. -10% lowers each selected price by 10 percent, and -10 without the percent sign takes 10.00 off each price. Everything else works the same, including the preview.

How does rounding work, and can I get prices ending in .99?

With Rounding set to None, NetSuite keeps the exact result. To Nearest and Round Up apply the Round To choice: Whole Number, multiples like .05 or .25, or price endings like .99. To Nearest made 90.72 into 91 here; Round Up would have made 139.32 into 140 instead of 139.

Do discount price levels update when the base price changes?

The ones calculated from the base price do. In this example Outfitter (-12%) and Wholesale (-25%) carry a Default Discount % and moved to 80.08 and 68.25 with the new List Price. Online Price was entered by hand, so it stayed at 79.00. Check a few items after the update, since a hand-entered price on a discount level won't follow.

Can I schedule a price update for a future date?

Yes. Set it up the same way and use the Schedule subtab to run it once on a date or on a repeat. Be careful with repeats: an 8% increase based on Existing Price that runs monthly raises prices 8% every month.

Can I set prices from cost instead of the current price?

Yes. Change Based on from Existing Price to Entered Cost, Average Cost, or Most Recent Cost. The Amount is then applied to that cost, so 30% based on Average Cost sets the price 30% above average cost.
