The quick answer
Set the bundle up as a Kit/Package item. List its member items and quantities on the Components subtab, and give the kit its own price on the Sales / Pricing tab. On a sales order, pick the kit in the Item column and click Add. NetSuite adds one line at the kit's price, here Base Price 139.00. It doesn't add the members as priced lines and there's no End of Group line, so the customer pays the package price instead of what the parts cost separately.
The example is a garden supplier selling a Raised Bed Starter Kit: a cedar bed frame, two bags of raised bed soil, a drip irrigation set and a pack of plant markers. Bought one by one, those parts cost 89.00 + 2 × 14.50 + 34.00 + 7.00 = 159.00. The kit sells for 139.00, so the customer saves 20.00. The screenshots use sample data, and the person and company names are fictional.
If you'd rather have each part show up on the order at its own price, use an item group instead. See how to sell a bundle with an item group.
Before you start
Kit items need the Kits/Packages feature, which is on the Items & Inventory subtab of Setup > Company > Enable Features. With it on, you create a kit at Lists > Accounting > Items > New and choose Kit/Package.
This walkthrough starts from a kit that already exists, with four inventory items as members and a Base Price of 139.00. The customer has no special pricing, so the kit comes onto the order at Base Price. A customer price level, customer-specific item pricing, quantity pricing, pricing rules or another currency can change the line's rate, and a promotion or discount can change the order total.
The other price levels on the kit, such as Preferred (-15%), come from the Multiple Prices feature and the price levels set up in your account. Your role and form decide whether you can change the Price Level or Rate on a line.
Tab names and placement depend on the item form your account uses. In this example the components sit under Purchasing / Inventory.
01. Compare the kit's price with its members
Go to Lists > Accounting > Items. The columns you see depend on the list view, so yours may differ.
Raised Bed Starter Kit has Type Kit/Package and a Base Price of 139.00. The four member items above it have their own Base Prices: RB-48 Cedar Bed Frame 89.00, SL-20 Raised Bed Soil 14.50, DR-10 Drip Irrigation Set 34.00 and TM-02 Plant Markers 7.00.
02. Check the kit's components and pricing
Click Raised Bed Starter Kit. The Kit/Package record opens on the Purchasing / Inventory tab. Its Components subtab lists what one kit contains: RB-48 Cedar Bed Frame (1), SL-20 Raised Bed Soil (2), DR-10 Drip Irrigation Set (1) and TM-02 Plant Markers (1). At their own prices that's 159.00, which is more than the kit's 139.00.
Display Components on Transactions sits above the grid and is cleared here. It controls whether the members are displayed on transactions, and what a printout shows also depends on your form and template. It doesn't change the kit's price.
Click the Sales / Pricing tab. The kit has its own pricing matrix, and its Base Price is 139.00. That's the package price. The other price levels, Preferred (-15%), Wholesale (-25%) and Online Price (-5%), are calculated from it. Cost Estimate Type reads Derived From Member Items, so the kit's estimated cost comes from its members even though its price doesn't.
03. Start a sales order
Go to Transactions > Sales > Enter Sales Orders.
In Customer, choose the customer, here Hollis Park Community Garden. The Summary shows a Subtotal and Total of 0.00.
04. Add the kit
On the Items subtab, open the Item list and choose Raised Bed Starter Kit. The list also holds the member items, so make sure you pick the kit record itself.
Click Add. The order gets one line: Raised Bed Starter Kit, Quantity 1, Price Level Base Price, Rate 139.00 and Amount 139.00. With this kit and form, no member lines are added. There's no End of Group line either, since that belongs to item groups.
The kit line works like any other item line. You can pick another price level or type a rate if your role and form allow it.
05. Check the order total
Scroll back to the top. The Summary Subtotal and Total are both 139.00.
Check the result
- The kit is on the order as one line, with no member lines and no End of Group line.
- The line's Rate matches the kit's own Base Price, 139.00, not the 159.00 its members add up to.
- Summary Subtotal and Total are 139.00, since nothing else is on the order.
The recording stops before saving, so click Save when the order is ready. The kit holds no stock of its own. When the order is fulfilled, inventory comes off the member items in the quantities on the Components subtab. If you partially fulfill kits, check how your account handles that before you rely on it.
Common questions
What is a kit/package item in NetSuite?
It's an item made of other items that you sell as one product. The kit lists its members and quantities on its Components subtab and has its own pricing on the Sales / Pricing tab. Raised Bed Starter Kit holds a bed frame, two bags of soil, a drip set and plant markers, and goes on the order as one item.
Is a kit's price the sum of its component prices?
No. The kit has its own pricing matrix, and NetSuite doesn't add up the members to price it. Here the members cost 159.00 separately and the kit's Base Price is 139.00.
Why does my kit show as one line on the sales order?
The kit sells as a single package, so the order gets one line for the kit instead of a line per member. With Display Components on Transactions cleared, as on this kit, there are no member lines and no End of Group line, and the order comes to 139.00.
What does Display Components on Transactions do on a kit?
It controls whether the kit's members are displayed on transactions. Clearing it doesn't remove the members from the kit or change its price, and inventory still moves on the members. What a printout shows also depends on your form and template.
Does a kit item hold inventory in NetSuite?
No. NetSuite tracks inventory on the member items, not on the kit. When the order is fulfilled, stock comes off the bed frame, soil, drip set and markers in the quantities on the Components subtab.
Which account gets the revenue from a kit?
Normally the kit item's income account or revenue setup, because the kit is the item you sold. If your account uses Advanced Revenue Management with kit auto-expansion, allocation and recognition can involve the member items instead, so check that setting before you count on it.
Can I change the kit's price on one order?
Yes, if your role and form let you. Pick another price level or type a rate on the kit line. The kit's pricing matrix doesn't change, so later orders still start at 139.00 unless other pricing applies.
Which feature do I need to enable to create kit items?
Kits/Packages, on the Items & Inventory subtab of Setup > Company > Enable Features. Then create the kit from Lists > Accounting > Items > New, add its members and quantities, and set its price.
What's the difference between a kit/package and an item group?
A kit has its own price and goes on the order as one line. An item group has no price of its own. It expands into its member lines at their own prices and totals them on an End of Group line. Use a kit when the bundle has a package price, and an item group when each part's price should drive the total.
