The quick answer
On an item fulfillment search, Applied To Transaction : Amount is the full amount of the sales order line being shipped. If that line ships in two fulfillments, both rows carry the whole line amount while COGS Amount only has each shipment's cost, so revenue gets counted twice. Add a Formula (Currency) column with ROUND( to prorate the line by shipped quantity, and build Commission from that instead.

Before you start
This example fixes an existing Transaction saved search called Rep Commission Estimate. Its criteria are Type is Item Fulfillment, Posting is true, Applied To Transaction : Document Number/ID is not empty, and a fulfillment date range of 9/1/2026 to 9/30/2026. It groups by Applied To Transaction : Sales Rep, and a Formula (Currency) column with Sum works out commission as 0.03 times revenue minus cost.
In this example the Applied To criterion leaves one row per shipped item line and drops the fulfillment's accounting-only rows. Run your search once and make sure no shipped line appears twice before you go further. Posting is true keeps fulfillments that have posted, which usually means shipped when Pick, Pack and Ship is on. Check how your account treats Picked and Packed fulfillments. You need edit access to the search and access to the fulfillments and sales orders behind it.
What you get is an estimate at sales order prices. It doesn't include invoiced amounts, header discounts, shipping, returns, or credit memos, and a loss produces a negative commission. Decide how your plan treats that before anyone gets paid off this number.
01. Find the total that looks wrong
Open Reports > Saved Searches > All Saved Searches and click View next to Rep Commission Estimate. The summary shows Sales Rep and Sum of Commission: Alicia Moreno at 14.25 and Jordan Pike at 92.70. The summary hides the rows behind each total, so there's no way to check Jordan's number from this page.
02. Compare shipped and ordered quantity
Click Jordan Pike. The drill-down page, Rep Commission Estimate: Jordan Pike Results, lists his three fulfillment rows with Sales Order, Fulfillment, Shipped Qty, Ordered Qty, Order Line Amount, COGS Amount, and Commission.
SO7104 shows up twice. IF5210 shipped 2 of the 3 units ordered and IF5217 shipped the last 1, but both rows show an Order Line Amount of 1,950.00. Their costs are 820.00 and 410.00, so each shipment gets credited with the whole line against only its own cost. That's how the two rows come to 33.90 and 46.20 of commission. SO7108 on IF5214 shipped 1 of 1 and looks fine at 12.60.
03. Add a Shipped Revenue column
Click Return To Summary, then Edit this Search, and open the Results subtab. Click Add Row under the columns and choose Formula (Currency) in Field.
Click the pop-out icon beside the Formula cell. In Formula, enter:
ROUND(
{quantity} is what this fulfillment shipped and {appliedtotransaction.quantity} is what the order line asked for, so each shipment gets its share of the line. NULLIF stops a zero ordered quantity from breaking the search; that row comes back blank instead. Click Set.
Enter Shipped Revenue in Custom Label and click Add. The new line lands at the bottom, after Commission. Click it, click Move Up so it sits right before Commission, and click OK.
04. Rewrite Commission and Save & Run
A result formula can't point at another column's label, so Commission has to repeat the Shipped Revenue expression. Click the Commission line's Formula cell, open its pop-out, and replace the formula with:
(
Click Set, then OK. Leave the Summary Type at Sum.
Open the arrow beside Save at the bottom of the page and choose Save & Run.
05. Reconcile the corrected rows
The summary now shows Jordan Pike at 34.20. Alicia Moreno is still 14.25, because none of her lines shipped in parts, so the formula gives her the same revenue as before.
Click Jordan Pike again to check the rows behind that total.
Check the result
- IF5210 shows Shipped Revenue 1,300.00, two thirds of the 1,950.00 line, and IF5217 shows 650.00. Together they add back up to 1,950.00.
- IF5214 for SO7108 still shows 1,200.00, since it shipped in full.
- Shipped revenue of 3,150.00 minus COGS of 2,010.00 leaves 1,140.00, and 0.03 of that is 34.20, the summary value.
- Reps whose lines all shipped in one go keep the same total as before.
Before you trust the numbers in your own account, add Quantity and Applied To Transaction : Quantity as result columns and look at a few rows. Shipped quantity should be positive and in the same unit of measure as the order line. If your fulfillment quantities come back negative, find out why before you reach for ABS(), since forcing the sign can also turn a reversal into revenue. Service, non-inventory, and drop-ship lines may have no COGS on the fulfillment and would look like pure profit, so exclude them or cost them another way. Rounding each shipment can also leave a cent's difference against the order line, which is fine for an estimate but worth knowing if you compare it to a payout.
Common questions
Why does my commission saved search count partially shipped orders twice?
On an item fulfillment search, Applied To Transaction : Amount is the full amount of the sales order line, and it shows up in full on every fulfillment of that line. COGS Amount only has each shipment's own cost. So a line that ships in two parts gets its revenue counted twice against the right total cost, and the commission comes out too high.
Can I use Created From : Amount instead?
No, that's worse. Created From : Amount is the whole sales order total, and it repeats on every fulfillment row, so an order with several lines or shipments gets counted many times over.
Will prorating change commission for orders that shipped in full?
No. When a fulfillment ships the full ordered quantity, shipped over ordered is 1, so the formula returns the same line amount as before. Only lines that shipped in parts change.
Why can't Commission just reference the Shipped Revenue column?
Saved search result formulas can't point at another column's custom label. Commission has to repeat the whole prorating expression, then subtract {cogsamount} and multiply by 0.03.
Why won't my summary commission search run after I change the sort?
In a summary search, Sort By has to be a result column with a summary type, such as the grouped Sales Rep column. Sort by a plain detail column and NetSuite shows a notice instead of results.
Is this the commission I should pay?
Treat it as an estimate. It uses sales order prices on what shipped, not invoiced revenue, and it ignores returns, credit memos, and shipping. A line sold at a loss gives a negative commission, so decide whether that offsets the rep's other lines or is floored at zero.
