Move a Subsidiary to a Different Parent in NetSuite

Parent subsidiary is locked on saved subsidiaries. Open a dated window in General Preferences, accept the Subsidiary Hierarchy Modification Legal Notice, change the parent, and check the new structure in the Subsidiaries list.

The quick answer

On a saved subsidiary, Parent subsidiary is display-only until you open the hierarchy for changes. Go to Setup > Company > General Preferences, enter a future date no more than 30 days away in Allow subsidiary hierarchy to be modified [Max: 30 Days], click Accept on the Subsidiary Hierarchy Modification Legal Notice, and save. Then edit the subsidiary, pick the new parent in Parent subsidiary, accept the notice again and save. The Subsidiaries list shows it indented under its new parent. The change can affect consolidated reports, exchange rates and eliminations, so try it in a sandbox first.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and company names are fictional. Use your own subsidiaries and dates when following the steps.

Before you start

Alder Crest Holdings bought Trailhead Gear Co. and set it up directly under the root subsidiary, Alder Crest. Finance wants it to roll up with the rest of the North American business, under North America, which already holds Alder Crest Retail US and North America Elimination.

You need NetSuite OneWorld. The role needs Full access to Set Up Company for the preference, Full access to Subsidiary Hierarchy Modification, Edit or Full access to Subsidiaries, and access to every subsidiary. Administrator normally has all of them, and that's the role used here. A subsidiary restriction on the role that leaves out any subsidiary involved will get in the way.

The move itself takes a minute. What it changes takes longer to check: which consolidated reports include the subsidiary, how its results translate to the new parent's currency, which elimination subsidiary handles its intercompany activity, and which users see it through subsidiary restrictions with Include Children. Before you move anything in production, save the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Trial Balance for the old parent, the new parent and the subsidiary, and download the consolidated and budget exchange rates if you use them.

01. Review the current hierarchy

Go to Setup > Company > Subsidiaries. The list shows Total: 7, and indentation shows the hierarchy. Trailhead Gear Co. is one level under Alder Crest. North America holds Alder Crest Retail US and North America Elimination, which has Elimination Yes.

Before: Trailhead Gear Co. sits directly under Alder Crest.

02. Confirm the parent is locked

Click Edit beside Trailhead Gear Co. Parent subsidiary shows Alder Crest as plain text, not a dropdown, so it can't be changed yet. Click Cancel.

Parent subsidiary is display-only on a saved subsidiary.

03. Open the hierarchy modification window

Go to Setup > Company > General Preferences. Find Allow subsidiary hierarchy to be modified [Max: 30 Days] in the right-hand column. It's empty. Some releases call the parent field Subsubsidiary Of, and before this preference existed a hierarchy change could need NetSuite Support.

The preference is empty, so the hierarchy is locked.

Type a future date no more than 30 days away, 10/23/2026 here, and leave the field. The date is the last day of the modification window. It isn't an accounting effective date, and nothing gets re-dated. When the window ends, Parent subsidiary locks again.

Leaving the field opens the Subsidiary Hierarchy Modification Legal Notice. It warns that existing financial statements may be lost, subsidiaries may be inactivated, consolidated and budget exchange rates may be recalculated irreversibly, elimination subsidiaries may get a different parent, auto-elimination journals may post to a different elimination subsidiary, Include Children may cover a different set of subsidiaries, role restrictions may change, reporting that crosses the change date may not return correct results, and customizations that use subsidiary may fail. Read it, then click Accept. The preference only takes effect once you accept and save.

The legal notice opens when you set the date.

04. Save the preference

The field keeps 10/23/2026. Click Save. Until that date, Parent subsidiary can be edited on saved subsidiaries.

The window is open until 10/23/2026.

05. Move the subsidiary to its new parent

Go back to Setup > Company > Subsidiaries and click Edit beside Trailhead Gear Co. Parent subsidiary is now a dropdown, still on Alder Crest. Open it. Subsidiaries are listed by full path. Choose Alder Crest : North America.

Parent subsidiary is a dropdown now. Pick the new parent by its full path.

Elimination subsidiaries aren't offered as parents, and a subsidiary can't move under itself or one of its own children. If the subsidiary has children, they stay under it and move too, so check what that does to consolidation.

The legal notice opens again, because the same risks apply to this move. Click Accept. Parent subsidiary keeps Alder Crest : North America.

The new parent, after accepting the notice.

Click Save. In this account NetSuite goes back to the Subsidiaries list. If yours shows the saved record, click List.

06. Confirm the new structure

The list still shows Total: 7. The move adds and removes nothing. Trailhead Gear Co. is now indented under North America, beside Alder Crest Retail US and North America Elimination.

After: Trailhead Gear Co. is in the North America branch.

Check the result

  1. The Subsidiaries list still shows the same total.
  2. The subsidiary is indented under its new parent.
  3. Reports for the old parent, new parent and subsidiary match what you expect when you compare them with the versions saved before the move.
  4. Consolidated and budget exchange rates are still right along the new parent path.

The indented list shows the structure changed. It doesn't show the accounting is right. In a large account the change can take a while to process. Then rerun the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Trial Balance you saved before the move and compare them. Intercompany activity between Trailhead Gear Co. and its new siblings may now eliminate in North America Elimination, depending on your intercompany setup, so review your automated elimination settings and check the next elimination journals. Saved searches, reports and role restrictions that use Include Children may cover a different set of subsidiaries.

Common questions

Why is Parent subsidiary read-only on my subsidiary?

NetSuite locks the hierarchy on saved subsidiaries so a casual edit can't rearrange consolidation. Set a date in Allow subsidiary hierarchy to be modified [Max: 30 Days] under General Preferences and accept the legal notice, and the field becomes a dropdown until that date.

Do I need NetSuite Support to change the subsidiary hierarchy?

Not anymore. With the right permissions, an administrator can open the modification window and move the subsidiary. You can still open a support ticket if you have questions first, but the consequences of the change are on your organization.

How long can the hierarchy stay open for changes?

Up to 30 days. Pick a future date in the preference; today's date doesn't open it. After the window ends, Parent subsidiary locks again, and you can set a new date if you need another change.

What permissions does the role need?

Full access to Set Up Company to set the preference, Full access to Subsidiary Hierarchy Modification, Edit or Full access to Subsidiaries, and access to all subsidiaries. Administrator normally has all of these.

Does moving a subsidiary change its currency or internal ID?

No. The move changes where the subsidiary sits, not its base currency, name or internal ID. Its results now translate along the new parent path, which is why the consolidated exchange rates need checking.

What happens to consolidated reports and exchange rates?

The new parent's consolidated reports include the subsidiary, and the old parent's no longer do unless it's still an ancestor. Consolidated exchange rates can be recalculated along the new path. Compare the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Trial Balance you saved before the move with fresh runs afterward.

Which elimination subsidiary is used after the move?

Intercompany activity is eliminated through the elimination subsidiary where the two trading subsidiaries meet. Here, activity between Trailhead Gear Co. and Alder Crest Retail US would normally go through North America Elimination. Check your automated elimination settings and the next elimination journals.
