How to run an income statement in NetSuite

Run a NetSuite income statement, check the reporting range, and read income, costs, expenses, and net income with illustrated examples.

The quick answer

To run an income statement in NetSuite, open Reports > Financial > Income Statement. Confirm the From and To periods or dates, refresh, then review income, cost of sales, expenses, and net income for that range.

An income statement answers how the business performed over a range of time. Start with that range, then work from revenue through costs to the net result. The screenshots use sample data and fictional person and operating-company names.

Before you start

Your role needs access to financial reports and the intended reporting scope. Decide which period or date range you need. User preferences, subsidiary restrictions, and report filters can affect the result.

01. Open the Income Statement

Go to Reports > Financial > Income Statement and confirm the report title. Wait for the results to finish loading.

Use this report for performance over a range. A balance sheet answers a different question: balances at a point in time.

Open the Income Statement from Financial reports.

02. Confirm the reporting range

Review From, To, and any scope filters. The example runs from Jul 2026 to Jul 2026, with Column: Total.

If you change a control, click Refresh and wait for the new output. Check the period or date basis before comparing this report with another one.

Confirm both ends of the reporting range.

03. Read income through to net income

The example shows 1,100.00 income, 9,685.93 cost of sales, and 2,880.00 expenses. Its Net Income is (11,465.93).

Follow the subtotals as well as the final row. Parentheses show a negative result here. Use account-level detail to investigate an unexpected account; this walkthrough does not reconcile each balance.

Read the net result together with the income and expense rows above it.

Check the result

  1. The From and To periods cover the intended range.
  2. The scope and report basis match any comparison.
  3. Income, costs, expenses, and net income have been reviewed together.

The report is ready for a closer account review. A loss in the sample is a report result, not a recommendation or a conclusion about your own business.

Common questions

How do I open the standard Income Statement in NetSuite?

From the home dashboard, go to Reports > Financial > Income Statement. Confirm that you opened the standard summary report, not Income Statement Detail, a budget report, or a custom version. The exact menu or report availability depends on your role, permissions, enabled features, and account configuration.

What sections appear on the standard Income Statement?

The standard report generally includes Income, Cost of Sales, Gross Profit, and Expense, followed by Net Ordinary Income. It may also include Other Income, Other Expenses, Net Other Income, and Net Income. Custom layouts, localization, account types, and enabled features can change the displayed sections.

Where do I find Net Income, and how is it calculated?

Net Income typically appears at the bottom of the Income Statement. NetSuite calculates it from Net Ordinary Income and Net Other Income, based on the accounts and report layout included in your reporting context. Custom financial reports, filters, accounting books, or localized configurations may produce a different presentation.

Why might my Income Statement differ from another report?

Differences commonly result from date-versus-period reporting, cash-versus-accrual basis, subsidiary or organizational filters, currency, accounting book, or role restrictions. Before comparing totals, confirm that both reports use the same context. Available filters and accounting-basis options vary by account configuration, enabled features, and user permissions.
