How to create an opportunity in NetSuite

Create and save a NetSuite Opportunity for an existing customer or company with a projected deal value.

The quick answer

Open a new Opportunity, select the correct company, enter the projected deal value in Projected Total, and select Save. Confirm the saved record shows the company, opportunity status, and projected total.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.

Before you start

You need permission to create Opportunities and access to the intended customer, prospect, or company record. Required fields and available options can vary by role, form, subsidiary, and enabled CRM features.

01. Check the new Opportunity form

Confirm that the page is a blank Opportunity form in create mode. The form shows required fields including Company, Status, Probability, Expected Close, Projected Total, Currency, and Exchange Rate. The exact fields on your form may differ from this example.

The blank Opportunity form displays the required primary and forecasting fields.

02. Select the company

In the required Company field, search for the intended customer, prospect, or company and select the matching result. Selecting a result is important because typing a name without choosing it may not establish the relationship. In the replay, the selected value is 1 Test company; use your intended entity instead.

The Company field contains the selected entity.

03. Enter the projected deal value

Enter the anticipated deal value in Projected Total, then review the displayed currency and related forecast fields. The replay uses US Dollar currency and ultimately displays 100.00; replace that sample value with the amount for your opportunity. Projected Total is a forecasted deal value, not collected revenue or a customer receivable.

Review Projected Total and the transaction currency before saving.

04. Save the Opportunity

Review the company, status, probability, expected close, and projected value, then select Save. Wait for the saved Opportunity page. The record remains an opportunity; no sales order or invoice is created here. Review the saved record for the company, status, and projected total. In the replay, the record shows In Discussion, a displayed probability of 20.0%, and Projected Total of 100.00; these are sample values from the recording and may differ in your account. This confirms the displayed saved fields only.

The saved Opportunity retains its projected value and status.

Check the result

  1. The saved page displays the intended customer, prospect, or company in the Company field.
  2. The saved page shows Projected Total with the amount entered for the opportunity and the expected currency.
  3. NetSuite displays Transaction successfully Saved and returns to the Opportunity record.

Common questions

How do I create a new Opportunity for a customer?

Open a blank Opportunity form, select the intended existing customer or prospect in the Customer or Company field, complete any required fields, and select Save. The available form, fields, and required values depend on enabled CRM features, customization, subsidiary configuration, and role permissions.

Which customer or company should I select?

Select the exact existing customer, prospect, or company associated with the potential deal, choosing a result from NetSuite’s suggestions rather than leaving only typed text. The records available for selection can vary by subsidiary, role permissions, and account configuration.

Where do I enter the opportunity’s projected value?

Enter the anticipated deal value in Projected Total, or in the equivalent amount field on the customized form, and verify the displayed currency. The amount represents potential deal value—not collected revenue, an accounts-receivable balance, or guaranteed sales; account settings may calculate or update it from item lines.

How can I confirm the Opportunity saved correctly?

Wait for NetSuite to open the saved Opportunity record and verify the record number or saved-record confirmation, selected customer or company, status, currency, and Projected Total. Saving an Opportunity creates a non-posting CRM record only; it does not automatically create an estimate, sales order, invoice, approval, email, or payment.
