The quick answer
Enter the opportunity's projected amount and probability, then open the weighted sales representative forecast for the matching subsidiary, representative, and period. The displayed weighted contribution is calculated from the projected amount and probability; it isn't booked revenue or cash received.
The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.
Before you start
You need permission to create opportunities and view the sales representative forecast. Confirm the opportunity's subsidiary, sales representative, expected close period, forecast settings, and proposed items before starting.
01. Check the opportunity form
Open Juniper Labs, verify Taylor Lane is its sales representative, and use Create New → Opportunity. Confirm that the new opportunity form has the intended company, sales representative, subsidiary, currency, and open status. In this example, the company is Juniper Labs, the sales representative is Taylor Lane, the subsidiary is Harbor US, and the currency is USD. Starting from the entity record carries the company into the opportunity.
02. Enter the forecasting inputs
Enter Device rollout as the title. Set Probability to 35%, Expected Close to September 18, 2026, Projected Total to 12000, Range Low to 10000, and Range High to 15000. Select Worst Case for Forecast Type, noting that the category's effect depends on the account's forecast configuration. Choose a status that permits the intended probability.
03. Add the first proposed item
Add Mobile Console to the Items sublist with quantity 12 and rate 1100. Commit the line and confirm that the displayed amount is 13200. This item amount contributes to Item Total but doesn't replace the deliberately retained Projected Total.
04. Add the second proposed item
Add Setup Service with quantity 2 and rate 1800, then commit the line. The displayed line amount is 3600, making the item total 16800 when combined with Mobile Console. Recheck Projected Total after adding the lines and retain 12000 rather than using the item total as the forecast estimate. Do not use Update Projected, which would replace the estimate with the item total.
05. Check the saved opportunity values
Review the saved opportunity and compare its company, sales representative, expected close, probability, projected total, range, and item lines with the entry. The displayed Projected Total is 12,000.00 while Item Total is 16,800.00, so these values are intentionally different. If your account recalculates Projected Total, review the saved estimate before interpreting the forecast.
06. Set the forecast context
In Edit Sales Rep Forecast, use Harbor US, Taylor Lane, and September 2026. Confirm that Forecast Is Weighted is Yes before reading the opportunity rows. Keep the forecast editor read-only for this review and don't change override fields.
07. Trace the opportunity contribution
Locate Device rollout in Opportunities and compare its displayed Probability of 35%, Item Total of 16,800.00, Most Likely value of 12,000.00, and Weighted Contribution of 4,200.00 with the saved opportunity. The displayed contribution corresponds to 12,000 multiplied by 35%; it is a forecast calculation, not independently verified revenue.
08. Read the calculated forecast rollup
Review the forecast rollup without saving changes. The displayed Opportunities subtotal has a Most Likely value of 6,200.00, including the other opportunity's 2,000.00 contribution, and Unbilled Orders shows 18,000.00. The displayed Calculated Forecast is 23,500.00 for Worst Case, 24,200.00 for Most Likely, and 25,250.00 for Upside; these figures reflect the prepared account configuration and should not be treated as booked revenue or cash. Quotes and Actuals are both zero in this prepared example.
Check the result
- The saved opportunity shows Probability 35%, Projected Total 12,000.00, and Item Total 16,800.00.
- The weighted forecast row shows Device rollout with Weighted Contribution 4,200.00.
- The forecast rollup displays Most Likely 24,200.00 and Unbilled Orders of 18,000.00 without changes to forecast overrides. These are the prepared example’s values; verify your own saved inputs and forecast configuration.
Common questions
How is an opportunity’s weighted forecast contribution calculated?
When the forecast is weighted, NetSuite multiplies the opportunity’s forecast amount by its probability. For example, a retained Projected Total of $12,000 at 35% probability contributes $4,200. The exact calculation and included forecast categories depend on account settings and forecast configuration.
Why can the projected amount differ from the item total?
Projected Total is the forecast estimate, while Item Total is the sum of the opportunity lines. They can differ intentionally—for example, $12,000 projected against $16,800 in proposed items. Adding items or saving may recalculate the projected amount in some accounts, so verify that the intended value was retained.
How do I trace an opportunity into a representative’s forecast?
Match the opportunity’s Sales Rep, Subsidiary, Expected Close, probability, and projected amount to the forecast context. In the representative’s weighted forecast, locate the opportunity row and compare its Weighted Contribution with the opportunity’s amount × probability; account roles, permissions, periods, and forecast settings determine which view and records are available.
Is an opportunity’s weighted forecast contribution booked revenue?
No. An opportunity is non-posting, so its weighted contribution is a pipeline estimate—not revenue, an accounts-receivable balance, or cash received. The forecast may also combine opportunities with unbilled orders, quotes, or actuals according to the account’s configuration, so read each category separately.
