How to Add a Labor Code for Shop-Floor Labor in NetSuite Advanced Manufacturing

Create an AM Labor Codes record in NetSuite Advanced Manufacturing with a location, skill, labor code, scanner code, cost type and base rate, then find it in the AM Labor Codes list.

The quick answer

Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Administration / Setup > Labor Codes and click New AM Labor Codes. Choose a Location and a Planning Skill Code, enter a Labor Code (required), a scanner code and a description, choose a Cost Type, enter a Base Rate and click Save. The new code appears in the AM Labor Codes list.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and company names are fictional. Use your own locations, skills and rates when following the steps.

This guide creates a labor code definition only. It doesn't create an employee, set payroll rates, add the code to a routing or record labor against a work order. Section names, list columns, list order and the Cost Type choices can vary by version, form and account.

Before you start

In this example, Alex Morgan at Example Supply Co. adds a code for pump assemblers at the Reno Plant. You need:

  • Advanced Manufacturing enabled, so the Advanced Manufacturing menu has an Administration / Setup group with Labor Codes. Menu labels can vary by version and role.
  • Permission to create AM Labor Codes records, and any account-specific required fields, custom forms or approvals satisfied.
  • The location and the planning skill the code belongs to. Both lists also offer a - New - entry if you need to add one.

01. Open the AM Labor Codes list

Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Administration / Setup > Labor Codes. The list shows each code's name, plant, cost type, base rate, description, labor code and skill code. In this example it holds nine codes and none for pump assemblers.

Nine labor codes exist, none for pump assemblers.

02. Fill in the new labor code

Click New AM Labor Codes. The form is grouped into Location, Planning Skill Code, Labor Type and Job Costing.

Choose Reno Plant as the Location and Assembler as the Planning Skill Code. Under Labor Type, enter ASM31 as the Labor Code, which is required, ASM31 as the Labor Scanner Code, and Pump assembler as the Description. Under Job Costing, choose Direct as the Cost Type and enter 31 as the Base Rate. The Cost Type list offers Direct, Indirect, Indirect - Inspection and Indirect - Packaging in this account.

Every field of the new code is filled in.

03. Save it and find it in the list

Click Save. The saved record opens with the labor code, ASM31, under the page title and the values you entered.

The saved record shows the values entered.

Open Advanced Manufacturing > Administration / Setup > Labor Codes again. The list now holds ten codes and the new ASM31 row sorts to the top by name, with Reno Plant, Direct, 31, Pump assembler and the Assembler skill code.

The list now has ten codes, with ASM31 first.

Check the result

  1. The saved record shows ASM31 under the page title with the Location, skill, scanner code, description, Cost Type and Base Rate you entered.
  2. The list total went from 9 to 10.
  3. The ASM31 row shows Reno Plant, Direct, 31, Pump assembler and Assembler.

Common questions

What is an AM Labor Code?

It is an Advanced Manufacturing custom record that names a kind of shop-floor labor, with a location, a planning skill, a scanner code, a cost type and a base rate. It is set up before labor is recorded.

What is the Labor Scanner Code for?

It is a short code for scanning or quick entry when labor is recorded. Use a short value without spaces. This guide doesn't show the scanning step.

What does Cost Type do?

It classifies the labor code for reporting. The list in the reviewed account offers Direct, Indirect, Indirect - Inspection and Indirect - Packaging. Saving a code creates a setup record. Labor is recorded separately, and the code is selected then.

Is Base Rate the pay rate?

It is a reporting value kept on the labor code. Don't treat it as a person's pay rate unless your account has set that up separately.

Why is the code named after the Labor Code?

The record's name is its Labor Code, so the list's Name column shows that value and the list sorts by it.

Why can't I see my new code in the list?

Check that you saved the record. If the list offers a Show Inactives option, a code marked Inactive may be left out of the default view until you select it. The exact control depends on the list view.
