How to Set Up AM Location Settings for Work Order Completions in NetSuite Advanced Manufacturing

Create AM Location Settings for a new plant so its work order completions take bins from the work centers, back-flush components at the yield-adjusted quantity and receive finished assemblies in Good status.

The quick answer

Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Administration / Setup > Location Setup and click New AM Location Settings. Choose the Location, enter a name in AM Location, and open the Work Order Completions tab. There you decide the Production Status of finished assemblies, the Bin Lookup Method (Location Bins or Work Center Bins) and the Uncontrolled BOM Issuance (Do Not Issue, Issue Standard Qty or Issue Yield Adjusted Qty). Click Save. Use one active record per location, because if no active record applies to a location these settings aren't used.

The screenshots show sample data. Person, company and location names are fictional. Use your own locations and choices when following the steps.

This guide sets up the location only. It doesn't complete a work order, issue components or move a bin. The values shown are one manufacturing-policy example from the account used here. Menu labels, list columns, defaults, option lists and the fields on the form can vary by version, custom form, costing configuration and account, so test a normal and a partial completion, a component missing from its bin and a scrap transaction before you rely on the settings.

Before you start

In this example, Alex Morgan at Example Supply Co. has opened a new Ogden Plant and wants its work order completions to take bins from each work center, back-flush components at the yield-adjusted quantity and receive finished assemblies in Good status. You need:

  • Advanced Manufacturing set up, with the Advanced Manufacturing tab in your navigation and permission to create its custom records.
  • The location already created in NetSuite. The settings are saved against that location.
  • A decision for the location on how bins are used (one set of location bins, or bins at each work center), how components are back-flushed and which inventory status finished assemblies should receive.
  • If you choose Work Center Bins, work centers that already have their bins and inventory status set, because this guide doesn't show those.
  • The custom form that shows the fields used here. A form with different fields or labels in your account may need adjusting.

01. Review the existing location settings

Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Administration / Setup > Location Setup. The entry opens the AM Location Settings List.

Location Setup is in the Administration / Setup flyout.

The list shows one row per location that has settings. In this example two plants have them, Layton Plant and Provo Plant, and the total reads 2. There is no row for Ogden Plant, so completions there aren't covered by a location record yet.

Two plants have location settings, and Ogden Plant isn't one of them.

02. Start settings for the location

Click New AM Location Settings. Choose Ogden Plant as the Location and enter Ogden Plant as the AM Location. Both are required. The AM Location is a name, and the list shows it under Name, so use a clear naming convention. Leave Inactive unchecked so the record can be used.

The location and the AM Location name are entered.

The behavior is set on the Work Order Completions tab. Open it.

03. Read the defaults

The tab has five sections: General, Material Settings, Scrap Settings, Operation Settings - Labor and Operation Settings - Machine. A new record isn't blank. In the account shown, Process Only Last Operation is checked, Issuance Timing is Issue Before Completion, Controlled BOM Issuance is Skip Component, Uncontrolled BOM Issuance is Issue Standard Qty and Bin Lookup Method is Location Bins. Production Status and Consumable Status are empty. Further down, Scrap Source is Use Scrap Records, Scrap Issuance is Issue For Scrap, Scrap Handling is Post As Scrap, and every labor and machine method is Default. Allow Assembly Override and Explicit Auto Issue start unchecked and aren't changed here.

The defaults decide the behavior until you change them.

The two existing rows show No under Process Only Last Operation, while a new record starts with it checked. Decide that setting deliberately for your plant, and read each default before you save.

04. Change three settings

Choose Good as the Production Status. This is the inventory status given to the assembly a completion produces, not the work order's own status. Good makes the finished assemblies usable. Choose Work Center Bins as the Bin Lookup Method, because this plant stages components at each work center, so completions use the bin assignments on the work centers instead of the Issue From Bin and Complete To Bin on this record. Choose Issue Yield Adjusted Qty as the Uncontrolled BOM Issuance, because the BOMs carry yield, so components that aren't controlled are back-flushed at the BOM quantity adjusted with the component yield. Leave the other settings as they are, including the Consumable Status list. These three choices are one policy example, not a recommendation for every plant.

Three settings are changed, and the rest keep their defaults.

In this account no field greys out or changes when you choose another, so check each one yourself before you save.

05. Save and check the list

Click Save. The saved record shows the Location as a link and the AM Location name. It opens on the Departments subtab, and the other subtabs are Work Centers, Work Order Completions, Planning Parameters, Notification, Files, Notes and Workflow.

The saved record shows the location as a link.

Open the Work Order Completions subtab to confirm the settings. It shows Good, Work Center Bins and Issue Yield Adjusted Qty, with the defaults for the rest.

The saved settings show the three changes.

Open Location Setup again. The list now has three rows, and the Ogden Plant row sits between Layton Plant and Provo Plant.

The list has three rows, and Ogden Plant is the second.

Scroll right to see the settings you changed. The second row shows Work Center Bins under Bin Lookup Method and Issue Yield Adjusted Qty under Uncontrolled BOM Issuance.

The second row shows the bin method and the yield-adjusted issue.

Check the result

  1. The AM Location Settings list went from 2 rows to 3.
  2. The Ogden Plant row sits between Layton Plant and Provo Plant.
  3. The Ogden Plant row shows Work Center Bins under Bin Lookup Method and Issue Yield Adjusted Qty under Uncontrolled BOM Issuance.

Common questions

What do AM Location Settings do?

They store how Advanced Manufacturing completes work orders at one location: which inventory status finished assemblies receive, where bins come from, how components are back-flushed, when material is issued and how scrap is handled. Use one active record per location, and confirm in your account whether a second active record for the same location is accepted, because this guide doesn't test it.

What happens at a location with no AM Location Settings?

If no active record applies, these location-level settings aren't used. Behavior then follows the standard settings and the other Advanced Manufacturing configuration, such as the work centers, routings, BOMs and preferences. Don't assume backflush, bin, status or scrap behavior is being applied only because the location uses Advanced Manufacturing.

What is the difference between Location Bins and Work Center Bins?

Location Bins uses the Issue From Bin and Complete To Bin set on this record. Work Center Bins uses the bin assignments on the work center, which suits plants that stage components at each cell. In the account shown, the form leaves Issue From Bin, Complete To Bin and Location Scrap Bin editable when Work Center Bins is chosen, and their values may be ignored. Confirm how your account applies them and make sure the work centers have valid bins, because a missing bin is a common cause of issues failing.

What is the difference between Issue Standard Qty and Issue Yield Adjusted Qty?

Both back-flush components that aren't controlled. Issue Standard Qty issues the BOM quantity. Issue Yield Adjusted Qty issues the BOM quantity adjusted with the component-yield configuration. Standard quantity can differ from actual consumption when the BOM quantities don't reflect production yield or loss. Do Not Issue means nothing is issued automatically. Controlled BOM Issuance offers only Skip Component in the account shown, which leaves controlled components to be issued separately.

What does Production Status mean here?

It is the inventory status given to the assembly that a completion produces, when it is set. It isn't the work order status. Pick the status that means usable production, and use a restricted or inspection status only when a quality process releases it. Consumable Status is a list of inventory statuses for consumables that are issued automatically, and an empty list means this record sets no override. This guide leaves it empty.

What is the difference between Issue Before Completion and Issue After Completion?

With Issue Before Completion the material issue is attempted first, so an issue failure can delay the completion. With Issue After Completion the completion is created first and the issue follows. The finished assembly can then exist even when the issue fails, and any unissued material or remaining work in process must be resolved through your manufacturing process. This guide leaves Issuance Timing at its default.

What do the scrap settings do?

Scrap Handling decides whether scrap is not posted, posted as scrap, or recorded as built and moved to the Location Scrap Bin. Issue For Scrap issues BOM material for scrapped quantity, which can cause extra consumption if that material was already issued separately. This guide leaves the scrap settings at their defaults, so test partial and previously issued quantities before you change them.

What do Allow Assembly Override and Explicit Auto Issue do?

Both start unchecked and this guide doesn't change them. Read their field help in your account, and check how assembly-level settings, component issue steps and auto-issue settings interact with this record before you turn either on.

Why does a new record have Process Only Last Operation checked?

In the account shown, a new record starts with it checked, while the two existing rows show No. It affects how reporting at intermediate operations is processed, so decide it for your plant instead of accepting the default. This guide doesn't test its effect, or whether changing a record affects work orders that already exist.
