Turn a Planned Supply Recommendation into a Work Order in NetSuite

Review MRP pegging, release a planned work order, and create the resulting work order with Mass Create Work Orders.

The quick answer

Review the planned supply and its pegged demand first. Release the selected planned order, then use Mass Create Work Orders to create the work order; releasing the recommendation alone doesn't create production or increase inventory.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.

Before you start

You need access to the applicable supply plan, Planning Workbench, and Mass Create Work Orders. Confirm that the planned work order is the recommendation you intend to release and that its item and location are correct.

01. Check the calculated planning result

In Planning Workbench, select the relevant location and item filters, then review the calculated supply plan result. Confirm the item is Field Pump Assembly at Tacoma and that the displayed on-hand quantity is 11 Ea. Check when the planning snapshot was calculated; later transactions can change on-hand stock.

Planning Workbench filtered to the item and location, with the on-hand quantity displayed.

02. Review the demand and pegged supply

In the Demand section, locate the Safety Stock requirement and open its pegging details. The displayed requirement is 48 Ea, covered by 11 Ea on hand and 37 Ea from planned order 6841. The planned order totals 52 Ea, so the pegged quantity is smaller because the remaining 15 Ea supports other demand.

Safety Stock Pegging shows how on-hand supply and planned order supply cover the requirement.

03. Release the planned order

Switch to Supply for the same item and location, select planned order 6841, and use Release Selected Orders. Confirm the selected order before completing the release. After processing, the row displays Released; this stage doesn't show a completed work order, production, or an inventory increase.

The planned order row shows its dates, quantity, and Released status after processing.

04. Create the work order from the released plan

Open Mass Create Work Orders, choose the released planned order rather than a time-phased item, and submit only the intended order. Before submission, compare the item, location, order date, production end date, and quantity with the released recommendation. The recorded result shows that the submission completed with zero errors.

Mass Create Work Orders lists the released planned order for submission.

05. Check the processed work order

Review the Processed Items result for the submitted planned order. The row shows the item and location, Line Status Complete, Result Success, and a Work Order link. This confirms creation of the transaction only; an assembly build, finished-goods receipt, and refreshed planning result are separate events.

Processed Items links the completed planned-order line to the generated work order.

Check the result

  1. The Safety Stock requirement displays 48 Ea, with 11 Ea on hand and 37 Ea pegged from the planned order.
  2. The selected planned order changes from Planned to Released before work-order creation.
  3. Processed Items shows Line Status Complete, Result Success, and a Work Order link after Mass Create Work Orders completes with zero errors.

Common questions

Does releasing a planned work order create the work order immediately?

No. Release changes the planned order’s status and makes it eligible for creation. Use Mass Create Work Orders afterward; availability and labels depend on enabled supply-planning features, role permissions, and account configuration.

Why can the pegged quantity be smaller than the planned-order quantity?

Pegging shows how much of a planned order is assigned to a specific requirement. For example, 37 units may cover part of a 48-unit safety-stock requirement while the planned order contains 52 units total; the remaining quantity may support other demand.

How do I create a work order from a released planned order?

Open Mass Create Work Orders, select Planned Orders, select the released recommendation, and submit it. Refresh the processing status and confirm that the result shows a successful processed line with a work-order link; the page and available options vary by role and account setup.

Does creating a work order increase finished-goods inventory?

No. A work order records planned or authorized production but does not represent completed output. Inventory increases only after the applicable assembly build or production completion is recorded, subject to the account’s manufacturing and inventory configuration.
