The quick answer
On a WIP work order with a routing, confirm that Scheduling Method is Backward and Production End Date holds the date you need. NetSuite works out the Production Start Date from the routing times and the working calendar. If you raise the quantity and save, the end date stays and the start date moves earlier. With Forward it is the other way round: you enter the start date and NetSuite works out the end date.
The example is a small bicycle parts company. Work order WO2131 is for 100 WS-310 Trail Hub Sets and has to finish on 10/30/2026. The customer then asks for 1,000. The screenshots use sample data, and the person and company names are fictional.
Before you start
This applies to an existing WIP work order with a manufacturing routing. Work Orders, Assembly Items, Manufacturing Routing and Manufacturing Work in Process must be enabled, and your role must be able to edit the order. Confirm the selected routing, work centers and working calendar before changing the quantity. Field placement and editability can vary with your form and account configuration.
Use a Released order with no production transactions for this walkthrough. An assembly build restricts quantity changes; WIP issues, completions, order status and custom workflows can also affect what you can edit. If your account uses BOM revisions, check the applicable revision and component requirements.
01. Read the schedule
Open WO2131. It is a WIP work order with Status Released and Quantity 100. In Scheduling Details, Scheduling Method is Backward and Production End Date is 10/30/2026. NetSuite has worked out a Production Start Date of 10/29/2026.
02. Change the quantity
Click Edit. Change Quantity from 100 to 1000.
Scroll to Scheduling Details. The Production Start Date is greyed out because NetSuite calculates it. Production End Date is required and holds 10/30/2026. Leave both as they are and click Save.
03. Check the new schedule
NetSuite saves the order and shows Transaction successfully Saved. In Scheduling Details the Production End Date is still 10/30/2026, and the Production Start Date has moved back to 10/16/2026. In this example, 1,000 units span 11 working days on the routing instead of 2, with weekends skipped. Your dates depend on the routing and calendars. Review component requirements on the Items subtab after changing the quantity; BOM quantities, units, yield, prior issues and manual line changes can affect them.
Check the result
- Production End Date is unchanged at 10/30/2026.
- Production Start Date is earlier than before.
- Scheduling Method still reads Backward.
Common questions
What is the difference between Forward and Backward scheduling?
Forward keeps the Production Start Date you enter and calculates the Production End Date. Backward keeps the Production End Date and calculates the Production Start Date.
How does NetSuite calculate the dates?
NetSuite schedules the routing operations, including setup and quantity-dependent run time, against the work center calendars and operation dependencies. Working hours, non-working days, operation overlap and routing configuration affect the dates.
Why did the start date change when I changed the quantity?
A larger quantity needs more routing time. On a Backward order the end date is fixed, so the start date moves earlier to make room.
Can I still edit the dates?
They are planned dates. On a Backward order the start date field is read only on the edit form and the end date is editable. The Actual Production Start Date and End Date fields are separate and record what really happened.
Can I change the quantity after building?
Once an assembly build has been made against the work order, changing its quantity is restricted. WIP issues, completions, order status and customizations can also affect editability. Use an order with no production transactions for this walkthrough.
