Set Component Yield on a NetSuite BOM Revision and See the Work Order Quantity

Set Component Yield below 100% on a BOM revision line in NetSuite and see the work order ask for more of that component than the BOM quantity.

The quick answer

Open a bill of materials revision, edit the component line and enter a Component Yield below 100%. Quantity on the line becomes BOM Quantity divided by the yield. A work order for that assembly then lists the larger Quantity, which is what NetSuite commits and issues. The bill of materials needs Use Component Yield checked.

Before you start

You need Advanced Bill of Materials and Assembly Items enabled, a bill of materials with Use Component Yield checked and at least one revision, and permission to edit revisions and enter work orders. In this example, Garden Gate Panel BOM has one revision, Gate Rev A, and the steel tube loses about a fifth of each length as scrap.

01. Read the baseline

Open Garden Gate Panel BOM and click Gate Rev A. On Components, ST-250 Steel Tube 25mm shows Component Yield 100.0%, BOM Quantity 12 and Quantity 12. The other two lines are also at 100.0%.

Every line starts at 100.0%, so Quantity equals BOM Quantity.

02. Set the yield on the line

Click Edit, then click the steel tube line. Replace Component Yield with 80 and click OK. The yield reads 80.0% and Quantity recalculates to 15, because 12 divided by 0.80 is 15. Description and Quantity are calculated, so you do not type them. Choose Save.

Quantity recalculates as soon as the yield changes.

03. Confirm the saved revision

Open Gate Rev A again. The tube line shows Component Yield 80.0%, BOM Quantity 12 and Quantity 15. The hinge and powder coat lines are unchanged.

The saved revision carries the new yield.

04. Enter a work order

From the Transactions menu, point to Manufacturing and choose Enter Work Orders. Select the subsidiary, the location and the assembly, then enter a Quantity of 20. Bill of Materials and Bill of Materials Revision fill in. Under Items, the tube line shows BOM Quantity 240, which is 12 for each of 20 panels, and Quantity 300, because 240 divided by 0.80 is 300. The hinge line stays at 40 and 40. The grid scrolls sideways, so the item names are out of view in this crop. The tube is the first line.

The yield adds 60 to what the order commits.

Check the result

  1. The revision line reads Component Yield 80.0% and Quantity 15.
  2. The work order tube line reads BOM Quantity 240 and Quantity 300.
  3. Lines at 100.0% show the same BOM Quantity and Quantity.

Common questions

How is Quantity calculated on a BOM revision line?

Quantity is BOM Quantity divided by Component Yield. At 100.0% the two are equal. At 80.0% a BOM Quantity of 12 becomes 15.

What do BOM Quantity and Quantity mean on a work order?

BOM Quantity is the quantity the BOM calls for across the whole order, here 12 for each of 20 panels. Quantity is that amount divided by the yield, which is what the order commits and issues.

What does Use Component Yield do?

When Use Component Yield is checked on the bill of materials, NetSuite applies the yield percentages. When it is cleared, the yield calculation is not applied and Quantity equals BOM Quantity.

Does editing a revision change work orders that already exist?

No. A saved work order keeps the lines it copied. Reopen it, or change its revision or production start date, if its quantities should follow the new yield. A new work order uses the revision effective on its production start date.

Is yield the same as recording scrap?

No. Yield is a planning allowance on each line. Actual consumption and scrap are recorded when the work order is completed or the assembly is built.
