The quick answer
Use Work Orders > Picking in WMS Mobile to pick every component task and move the picked stock to a configured WIP-type staging bin. Then use Work Orders > Build Assembly to enter the completed quantity, inventory status, finished lot or serial details, and output bin. Finish in the desktop UI by opening the saved Assembly Build from the work order's Related Records and checking its Created From link, Quantity to Build, and Inventory Detail popup.

WO-7318 is released for five Sensor Hubs, but it still reads Built 0 / Buildable 5. Five Housing Shells and five Signal Boards are committed, so the warehouse operator needs to pick and stage both requirements before recording production. The walkthrough ends by returning to the work order and proving that it now reads Built 5 / Buildable 0 with linked Assembly Build AB-7319.
Before you start
Use a released work order with WIP cleared and no manufacturing routing for this flow. The WIP-type bin is temporary component staging for a non-WIP work order; it does not make the work order WIP-enabled. WMS Work Orders must be configured for mobile picking and assembly builds.
Confirm that the effective BOM or BOM revision and units are correct for the transaction date. The operator must be able to access the warehouse and work-order mobile functions. At least five units of each component must be available in eligible source bins, statuses, and lots or serial numbers after existing commitments are considered. The staging bin must be an active WIP bin for Mesa Warehouse and enabled for the account's WMS/mobile manufacturing process; the finished-goods bin must be active and eligible for assembly output. The posting period must be open. If the account restricts picking to fully committed work orders or uses backflush rules, confirm that WO-7318 is eligible for this individual component-picking flow.
This example builds 5 Each(1) of a lot-numbered assembly with inventory status Good. Lot, serial, expiry-date, inventory-status, and bin prompts depend on the item and account configuration. Routed or WIP work orders use a different completion process.
01. Check the released work order
Open the work order before starting mobile picking. WO-7318 is Released for a quantity of 5 Each(1) of Sensor Hub at Mesa Warehouse. Buildable is 5, Built is 0, the WIP box is clear, and Manufacturing Routing is empty. The Items subtab shows Housing Shell and Signal Board with Quantity 5 and Committed 5 each. Committed, Used in Build, and Back Ordered are different columns; read each one before sending the task to the warehouse.
02. Open the component pick tasks
Open Mobile Emulator > Mobile Screen, choose WMS, and select Mesa Warehouse. From the Main Menu, open Work Orders > Picking and tap WO-7318 in the Work Orders list. The Select Pick Task page shows the assembly item, Built 0, Buildable 5, and a Pick Tasks list with Housing Shell and Signal Board at 5 Each(1) each. The Quantity column is what is still left to pick; it drops as tasks complete. This procedure requires both tasks to be fully picked before staging and building; a partial build needs a separate procedure.
03. Pick each component from eligible stock
Tap Housing Shell. Enter Bin shows the recommended bin and its quantity; switch on Show all bins to see every bin that holds the item with its quantity and status, then pick the bin. Enter Item confirms the item to pick. On Enter Quantity, type the quantity and tap the lot in Available Lots. If Inventory Status is enabled, keep or change the status to an eligible value. The example uses source bin A-02-04, quantity 5, status Good, and lot HS-2609-A. Pick Task Complete confirms the task; Next Pick Task returns to the list with Housing Shell at 0. Repeat for Signal Board with source bin B-01-02, quantity 5, status Good, and lot SB-2609-A. A serialized component requires five eligible serial numbers rather than one lot and quantity.
The available-lot list is a stock check, not a completed allocation. Select or scan the lot that is physically present and eligible for the task. If a source bin cannot supply the full quantity, use the account's approved shortage procedure: choose another eligible bin or lot, record a partial quantity, or use the configured no-stock or bin-empty option. Do not treat a partial pick as complete production, and do not close or bypass the remaining task without documenting the shortage.
04. Stage the picked components
After both component tasks are picked, choose Go To Staging. On Enter Staging Bin, switch on Show all bins and select the configured WIP-type staging bin; this example uses WIP-STAGE-03. The Staging Complete page says the items were staged to WIP-STAGE-03 and lists Housing Shell and Signal Board at 5 Each(1). Check both quantities and confirm that no required task remains open before proceeding.
This message confirms the warehouse movement from the component source bins into staging. It does not increase finished-assembly inventory, consume the staged components into production, or complete the work order.
05. Record the finished assembly
Choose Main Menu on Staging Complete to get back to the Work Orders menu, open Build Assembly, and tap WO-7318. The list shows # Buildable 5 and # Built 0/5. Confirm that the buildable quantity supports the physical completion, then enter 5 on Enter Quantity; this procedure does not use overbuilding. If Inventory Status is enabled, select an eligible finished-goods status such as Good. On Enter Lot, type the finished lot SH-2609-01. Enter Expiry Date 09/30/2027 only when the lot setup exposes the field and permits manual entry; otherwise use the generated or required value. A serialized assembly would require five serial numbers instead. On Enter Bin, pick FG-02 from the eligible bins after confirming it belongs to Mesa Warehouse and can hold the assembly, then choose Enter Bin.
06. Check the mobile confirmation
Do not leave the workflow until the mobile Assembly Complete page shows the intended result. It says Work Order # WO-7318 has been successfully completed and lists Sensor Hub at 5 Each(1). The finished lot and output bin are not repeated here; you confirm them on the saved Assembly Build in the next step. This is an assembly-build confirmation, not a WIP Work Order Completion. If the quantity differs from the physical completion, note the transaction and follow the account's correction process before starting another work order.
07. Inspect the saved Assembly Build
After any required backend processing finishes, refresh the work order on the desktop. WO-7318 now shows status Built, Built 5, Buildable 0, and the Create Build and Close buttons are gone. Open Related Records > Builds and follow the new Assembly Build, or find it through the account's transaction search. AB-7319 is linked to WO-7318 through Created From and shows Quantity to Build 5. Click the Inventory Detail icon beside it to open the popup: lot SH-2609-01 in bin FG-02, status Good, expiration date 09/30/2027, quantity 5. Each component line on the Components subtab has its own Inventory Detail icon for the consumed lot. The transaction number is example data; your account assigns its own number.
The saved record proves that an Assembly Build was created. Its finished-assembly Inventory Detail proves the output tracking values recorded on that transaction; it does not by itself prove which component lots or serial numbers were consumed. Inspect the component Inventory Detail or related transactions when that proof is required. A non-WIP work order is nonposting; the Assembly Build is the production transaction expected to increase the finished assembly and reduce its components, subject to the recorded inventory detail and account configuration. It does not by itself prove final on-hand quantity, valuation, costing, or general-ledger impact. Review those results after any account-specific costing or asynchronous processing finishes.
Check the result
- After refreshing the source work order, its built quantity increased by the mobile build quantity.
- The saved Assembly Build is linked to the correct work order and carries the intended assembly quantity.
- The build's Inventory Detail popup matches the finished lot or serial number, expiry date, inventory status, and output bin entered in WMS Mobile.
Common questions
Why doesn't “Staging Complete” mean the assembly is built?
Staging moves picked components from their source bins into the configured WIP-type staging bin. It does not create the finished assembly or consume those components into production. The operator must still complete Work Orders > Build Assembly. WIP-enabled or routed work orders use a different completion flow.
Why doesn't the work order appear in mobile picking?
Confirm that the work order is Released, belongs to the warehouse selected in WMS Mobile, has remaining buildable quantity, and is eligible under the account's commitment and backorder rules. For this procedure, WIP must be cleared and no manufacturing routing can be assigned. Also check the operator's mobile permissions and the warehouse's component and staging-bin setup.
What should I do if a component is short or only partially picked?
Use the account's approved shortage process. That may mean selecting another eligible bin, lot, or inventory status; recording a partial quantity; or using a configured no-stock option. A partial pick leaves quantity to resolve, so do not run this full-quantity build until both component tasks are complete. Use a separate procedure when the account allows partial builds.
Where do I verify the transaction after the mobile build?
First match the completed quantity on Assembly Complete. Then open the saved Assembly Build in the desktop UI and verify Created From, assembly, Quantity to Build, location, and the finished lot, bin, and status in its Inventory Detail popup. Check on-hand quantity, costing, valuation, and GL impact separately when those controls are required.
Which lot, serial, status, and expiry prompts should I expect?
They depend on item tracking and account configuration. Lot-numbered items use lot details; serialized items require the individual serial numbers. Inventory Status, expiry entry, and manual output-bin selection appear only when the enabled features and item setup require them. Follow the prompts shown in your account rather than forcing the example values.
