The quick answer
Go to Configurator > Product > Standalone, choose a Series, then open AUDIT and click Materials and Routings. Choose a package under Select a Packaged Product Option and open both dialogs again. In the example, the Premium Package changed the price, replaced an Oak top item with a Cherry one, added a plastic wire management line and added a Cut Grommet Hole operation. Nothing is submitted.
The screenshots show sample data. Person and company names are fictional. Item IDs, prices and work centers come from the example product, so yours will differ.
Before you start
In this example, Alex Morgan at Example Supply Co. wants to know what the shop would build if a customer chooses the Premium Package of a made-to-order desk.
- The Configurator SuiteApp is installed, its tab is visible to your role, and your role can open Configurator > Product > Standalone. The example account was inspected with an administrator role. Whether other roles see the AUDIT menu was not tested.
- The product is already set up with its series, packages, and the items and routing operations behind them. This guide does not open or change that setup.
- This guide does not submit the configuration. It creates no estimate, sales order or work order.
- The Configurator's work order creator and launcher lists in the example account were empty, so this guide does not show a configured item becoming a work order. The audit dialogs only list what the page generates for the current choices.
01. Open the configurator
Open Configurator > Product > Standalone. Depending on your window width the Configurator tab can sit under the More menu, as in the screenshot below. Standalone is the first entry under Product. A loader reading Building Your Configurator appears, then the product page opens in the whole window without the NetSuite menus. This page is titled Furniture \ Office \ Desk. Unit and Total are 0.00, Select a Series is empty and the Validations panel shows Invalid Demo BOM. Nothing is chosen, so nothing is priced. That message comes from the product's own setup, so your wording will differ.
02. Choose the series
Open Select a Series and choose L420, the only series in the example product. The page fills in its defaults: the L-Shape, Rectangle desk, 60 wide, 24 deep and 30 high, with a Wood top in Oak. Unit and Total show 2,142.00, and the Validations panel reads Step 1 - Pre-configured Packages. That panel is guidance for the next decision, not an error.
03. Read the Summary
Scroll the right-hand pane down to Summary. It lists the part number L420-60-24-30-W-OK-NF101-CG, the L420 desk in Oak at 2380.00, a promotion of -238.00 and a total of 2142.00. The Summary prints its amounts without thousands separators, while Unit and Total in the page bar use them.
04. Audit the materials and routing
Before choosing a package, open AUDIT in the blue bar and click Materials. The dialog lists nine lines, from DM-1624 to TP-6024OK, an Oak Wood Table Top. Each line has an Item ID, Description, QTY, UOM, Pur price, Cost and Ext. The Name column was empty in the example. There is no wire management line yet.
Close the dialog, open AUDIT again and click Routings. Four operations are listed, from Parts Staging at 1000 to Desk Assembly at 1060, each with a work center, a comment and a run time.
05. Choose the Premium Package
Close the dialog and scroll the left pane down to Pre-configured & "Custom" Packages. Open Select a Packaged Product Option. The list describes what each package includes, and the example offers a Base, a Premium and a Deluxe Package. Choose Premium Package.
Top Species switches from Oak to Cherry, and the unit price becomes 3,357.00. The Summary now shows the Cherry desk at 3680.00, the promotion at -368.00 and a new line, Wire Management: Plastic (+ $45). The Validations panel moves on to Step 2 - Choose a Customization Option. The page also asks whether to customize the package further and shows an Accessories section. This guide answers neither.
06. Audit again
Open AUDIT and click Materials. Ten lines are listed now. TP-6024CH, a Cherry Wood Table Top, replaces the Oak top, and WM-1000PL, Plastic Wire Management, is new.
Close the dialog, open AUDIT and click Routings. Five operations are listed. Cut Grommet Hole at 1070 now follows Desk Assembly. The page does not say which choice adds each operation, and the order of events is the only evidence here that wire management is behind it. Check the product's own setup before relying on a rule.
Leave the page without clicking Submit & Close. Nothing in this guide saves the configuration.
Check the result
- Before a series was chosen, Unit and Total were 0.00 and Validations read Invalid Demo BOM.
- After series L420, Unit and Total were 2,142.00, Materials listed nine lines and Routings listed four operations.
- After the Premium Package, Top Species was Cherry, the Summary had a Wire Management line and Unit and Total were 3,357.00.
- Materials then listed ten lines, with TP-6024CH replacing TP-6024OK and WM-1000PL added, and Routings listed five operations, with Cut Grommet Hole added.
Common questions
How do I see the bill of materials a NetSuite Configurator choice generates?
Open the product's standalone page from Configurator > Product > Standalone, make your choices, then open AUDIT and click Materials. The dialog lists the material lines for the current choices. Choose again and reopen it to compare.
What does AUDIT > Materials show in the NetSuite Configurator?
A table of the material lines the page generates for the current choices: Item ID, Name, Description, QTY, UOM, Pur price, Cost and Ext. In the example the Name column was empty. The dialog opens over the page and does not change your choices. AUDIT also has entries for Pricing, Items, CPI, Routings, Actions and Data; this guide opens only Materials and Routings.
How can I see which routing operations a configured product would use?
Open AUDIT and click Routings. Each operation shows its name, operation sequence, work center, comments and run time. In the example, choosing the Premium Package took the list from four operations to five.
Does choosing a package in the Configurator change the price and the materials?
It can. In the example, the Premium Package changed Top Species from Oak to Cherry, added Wire Management: Plastic (+ $45) to the Summary, moved the unit price from 2,142.00 to 3,357.00, swapped the top item in Materials and added a wire management line. Another product or package can behave differently, because the rules belong to the product's setup.
Where do I open the standalone Configurator for a product in NetSuite?
Go to Configurator > Product > Standalone. Standalone is the first entry under Product. Depending on your window width, the Configurator tab can sit under the More menu. The product page opens in the whole window and does not show the NetSuite menus.
Does the Configurator create a work order when I choose options?
Not from the steps in this guide. Choosing options and opening the AUDIT dialogs only shows what the page generates. Submitting a configuration is a separate step that this guide does not take, and in the example account the work order creator and launcher lists were empty, so it does not show what a submission creates.
What does the Validations panel mean in the Configurator?
It gives guidance on the current choices. Before a series was chosen it showed Invalid Demo BOM in red. After the series it showed Step 1 - Pre-configured Packages, and after a package it showed Step 2 - Choose a Customization Option. Whether a message blocks submitting depends on the product's setup, which this guide does not open.
Why do Unit and Total show different number formats from the Summary?
In the example, the Unit and Total in the page bar print amounts with thousands separators, such as 3,357.00, and the Summary prints them without, such as 3357.00. They are the same amount.
