The quick answer
Open Advanced Manufacturing > Data Collection > Enter Results/Loss/Downtime/Labor, type the Work Order and Operation No, open the Material Loss tab, enter a Loss Quantity and a Loss Reason, click Save above the Production Loss list and then Refresh. The entry appears in Manufacturing Reports > Production Loss Report - Detail, and its Loss Category comes from the reason.
The screenshots show sample data. Company, person, work order, item and work center names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.
Before you start
You need Advanced Manufacturing, a WIP work order whose routing contains the operation, and a role that can open Production Data Entry and the loss report. Link each loss reason to a loss category before you test, because the report takes its Loss Category from the reason, and make sure the reason is active. The work order, operation, quantity and reason below are example values, so use your own. This example uses work order WO3162 for assembly PMP-200 and operation 10, Housing Machining, at Machining Cell 3. The period default, the empty-report wording and the Time default can differ by release, role and customization.
Material loss is for units of the work order's assembly lost during an operation, not for component consumption. An entry records a loss for reporting. It is separate from recording production results, issuing components, completing the work order and adjusting inventory, and this walkthrough shows no inventory or accounting effect.
01. Check this week's losses
Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Manufacturing Reports > Production Loss Report - Detail. Date Recorded is set to this week to date and every other filter is - All -. With nothing recorded yet, the report says No results found and the count at the top reads Total: 0.
02. Choose the work order and operation
Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Data Collection > Enter Results/Loss/Downtime/Labor. The Production Data Entry page identifies the operation at the top and has Results, Material Loss, Downtime and Labor tabs underneath.
Type WO3162 in Work Order and press Tab. Assembly Item fills in as PMP-200. Type 10 in Operation No and press Tab. Operation Name fills in as Housing Machining and Work Center as Machining Cell 3. All three of those fields are read-only.
03. Enter the loss
Open the Material Loss tab. In the account reviewed, Time already held the current date and time, so check it matches when the loss happened. Enter 2 in Loss Quantity and choose Visual Damage in Loss Reason. Leave Asset Name and Employee empty. If you want the list to update on its own after saving, check Refresh Lists After Save/Edit near the top of the page first. This example leaves it unchecked.
04. Save the entry and refresh the list
The buttons that save the entry are on the toolbar above the Production Loss list, not at the top of the page. Click Save. Loss Quantity and Loss Reason clear, and Time shows a new time. The list is still empty. Click Refresh and it shows one row: WO3162, Operation Seq 10, Operation Name Housing Machining, the time of the entry, Quantity 2 and Loss Reason Visual Damage. Work Center, Asset and Employee are blank.
Ignore the Add and Cancel buttons under the list. They belong to the blank line at the bottom and do not save an entry.
05. Find the entry in the report
Go to Advanced Manufacturing > Manufacturing Reports > Production Loss Report - Detail again. The report now lists one row for today: Work Order # WO3162, Assembly PMP-200, Loss Reason Visual Damage and Qty 2. Loss Category reads Damaged Material. Nobody typed that. It is the category the Visual Damage reason belongs to. Work Center and Asset show - None -, and the Total row adds Qty to 2.0.
Check the result
- The report reads Total: 1 and lists WO3162 with Qty 2.
- Loss Reason is Visual Damage and Loss Category is Damaged Material, the category set up for that reason.
- The Total row reads 2.0, the Qty you typed in step 03.
Common questions
Why does Production Data Entry show nothing after I click Save?
Save stores the entry, but the list under the fields only changes when you click Refresh. If you check Refresh Lists After Save/Edit near the top of the page, the list refreshes as soon as you save. In the account reviewed, that box was unchecked by default.
What do Add and Cancel under the Production Loss list do?
They are the buttons for the blank line at the bottom of the list. They do not save a loss entry. In the account reviewed, clicking Add only added a blank row. Use Save in the toolbar above the list.
Where does the Loss Category on the report come from?
From the loss reason. Each reason can be linked to a loss category, and the report shows the category of the reason you chose. If a reason has no category, the report may leave Loss Category blank, so check the reason's setup before testing.
Why does the Production Loss Report - Detail show - None - for Work Center?
In the account reviewed, entries saved on Production Data Entry showed - None - in Work Center, including one saved with an asset chosen. The asset appeared in the Asset column, but Work Center stayed - None -, and a report filtered by Work Center did not list those entries. Asset and work center are separate values, and what each report shows can depend on the work order, routing and your configuration. If you see - None -, check the work order and routing before treating it as the expected result.
Why is my entry missing from the report?
The report opens on Date Recorded this week to date, and in the account reviewed an entry counted on the date of its Time. Open Date Recorded and choose All or a wider range, and check that Work Order, Asset, Assembly, Loss Category and Loss Reason are all set to - All -. Open the report again after saving, because it lists saved entries.
Does recording a loss here change the work order?
In the account reviewed, Quantity Scrapped on the work order stayed at 0. That work order also moved from Released to In Process and showed an Actual Production Start Date after production data was saved against it, so other production activity or your configuration may drive status. Check the work order's status, built quantity and production records after saving instead of assuming a particular result. This walkthrough shows no inventory or accounting effect.
