The quick answer
Open the sales order's Items tab, select the intended Automatic Location Assignment Configuration, and run Auto Assign Locations. Then read the Location cell on every item line. In this two-item example, both lines go to Eastern Warehouse because it is the warehouse that can supply both items under the first ship-complete rule.
The names and inventory here are fictional examples. The recording shows an assignment on an unsaved sales-order entry; it does not show a saved order number or an item fulfillment. The official walkthrough uses a different account and an older interface.
Before you start
You need Multi-Location Inventory and Automatic Location Assignment enabled, a valid configuration for the order's subsidiary, and permission to view its rules and edit the sales order. Check qualifying inventory by location rather than relying only on an On Hand figure. Location eligibility and the Closest Location strategy also depend on shipping restrictions and usable address/location geography. The source does not show those setup details, so verify them in your account before relying on the result.
01 · Check the rule order
Open the applicable Automatic Location Assignment Configuration and read Rules in evaluation order. This example puts Warehouse Ship Complete first and a multiple-location fallback second. The first rule gets the first chance to assign the open lines.
02 · Check the ship-complete rule
Open the first rule. Here it applies to All Line Items, limits candidates to Warehouse locations, uses Minimize Fulfillment Locations, allows 1 Location, and selects the Closest Location among eligible choices. “Closest” does not override the one-location requirement: the chosen warehouse still needs enough available stock for both lines.
03 · Prepare the two-line order
The example order has one Wristwatch and one Bracelet. The source narration describes the western location as stocked for the watch but not the bracelet, while the eastern location can cover both. On Items, confirm the intended configuration and check that the two line-level Location cells are blank before running assignment. The order-level Location field is not a substitute for checking the item rows.
04 · Run automatic assignment
Click Auto Assign Locations on Items. A message confirms the action executed. Acknowledge it, then inspect the rows; the message alone does not tell you which location each item received.
05 · Verify both line locations
The Location column now shows Eastern Warehouse on both the Wristwatch and Bracelet lines. Under the first rule's one-location constraint, Western Warehouse cannot cover both lines. Eastern Warehouse can, so it is the eligible choice shown in this example. Check current stock and other eligibility rules before saving or fulfilling a real order. This walkthrough stops at the visible line assignments.
Common questions
Why did the farther warehouse receive both lines?
The first rule sought one eligible warehouse for all applicable lines. The example's western location could cover the watch but not the bracelet. The eastern location could cover both, so the resulting lines show Eastern Warehouse.
Does the execution message mean every line was assigned?
No. Read the Location cell on each item line. An exception, restriction, or shortage can leave a line unassigned or change which rule applies.
Does automatic assignment save or fulfill the sales order?
The execution message confirms that the action ran; it does not prove that the order was saved, approved, fulfilled, or invoiced. This walkthrough shows line locations on the entry form, without a saved transaction number or related fulfillment.
Will the fallback rule split the order if no warehouse has both items?
A later rule may run when earlier rules leave lines unassigned. It may assign remaining lines elsewhere or split an order, depending on its scope, inventory, and strategy. This walkthrough does not demonstrate that fallback result.
What if Auto Assign Locations is missing?
Check the enabled feature and required setup, a valid configuration for the subsidiary, role permissions to edit the order, and whether the form and order state support the action. The inspected current account had a sales-order Items grid but did not expose this control, so the feature-specific images here come from the accepted reconstruction of the official walkthrough.
