The quick answer
Start with the Sales Order that needs warehouse work. Open Create a Wave, search the correct warehouse for Sales Order demand, and review the returned lines instead of releasing everything in the result. In this example, the supervisor selects the eligible 18 EA line for SO-8452, confirms Single Order and Released, and saves. The job is done when the saved wave is Released with zero failed line items and its Pick Tasks subtab shows a Ready task for the same item and quantity.
The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.
Before you start
The NetSuite WMS features and SuiteApps used by the account must be enabled, and the selected warehouse must be configured for wave processing. The Sales Order should be unfulfilled and eligible at that warehouse, use a supported item type, carry the warehouse location at the order or line level, and not already belong to an active wave. The intended inventory line also needs the commitment or allocation required by the account. If Sales Order approval routing applies, the order must reach the status your account requires before it becomes eligible.
Use the WMS Warehouse Manager role or an equivalent role with permission to create waves and view Sales Orders and pick tasks. Holds, Ship Complete settings, commitment or allocation, employee location access, line-level locations, and other account rules can change which lines appear. Priority and pick-decomposition options can also be account-specific. This guide stops at task generation; it does not demonstrate picking, staging, packing, fulfillment, or shipment.
01. Find the order waiting for warehouse work
The WMS Warehouse Manager dashboard shows SO-8452 for Summit Health Clinics in Sales Orders to Ship. That tells the supervisor which order needs attention, but the dashboard is not proof that a pick task already exists. The goal is to turn the order's eligible glove line into defined picking work.
02. Open Create a Wave
In the WMS Warehouse Manager center, go to WMS Outbound > Create a Wave. A standard desktop role may expose the page under Transactions > Inventory > Create a Wave. Global Search may also find it when permissions allow and the menu path differs.
On Wave Criteria, review the selected template. Choose Portland Distribution Center under Location and Sales Order under Transaction Type, then choose Search. Add customer, date, shipping, order, or item filters when you need a narrower result set. The example template is Default Wave Criteria Template; another account may supply or remember a different template.
Location access and field labels can differ by role and page version. If the result set is too broad, return to Wave Criteria and narrow it before selecting a line.
03. Review the warning and select the line
The draft wave displays This wave contains partial fulfillments and marks SO-8458 with an information icon. Treat the message as a prompt to inspect the returned lines and their commitment, not as proof that anything has shipped. SO-8458 stays unselected in this example.
Check Picking Type and Status before touching any line. The draft opened with Single Order and Released in this example, so the walkthrough only opens each list to confirm the value. If your account defaults to Pending Release or a different picking type, change them here. Review any priority or pick-decomposition options your account exposes before saving; the replay does not change either one. Then open Line Items and select only the line intended for this wave. Here, that is Sales Order SO-8452, item MED-GLOVE-L, quantity 18 EA. Single Order keeps this example's selection organized by one order, but decomposition, units, item behavior, and account configuration can change the number or grouping of generated tasks.
Before saving, compare the selected line with the Summary. The example shows one selected order, one selected line, and a total quantity of 18.
04. Release the wave
Choose Save. The exact save or release control can differ by account and version, but the walkthrough uses the Save button shown on the draft wave.
On the saved record, confirm the status next to the wave number reads Released. Then review the Summary for selected, released, and failed line-item counts. Example Wave 812 shows one line released, zero failed, and one selected. These are example identifiers and counts, not values to copy into another account.
05. Verify the Ready pick task
Open the saved wave's Pick Tasks subtab. Match the generated work to the intended item, quantity, and unit, and inspect any failed task or task-line status the account displays. Example task 1456 shows MED-GLOVE-L, 18 EA, and Ready. Pick decomposition or other account settings can split a selected line differently.
Ready confirms that the system generated picking work for the selected line. It does not prove that anyone picked, staged, packed, fulfilled, or shipped the item. Task generation can be asynchronous in some accounts, so refresh or check the account's processing status if the Pick Tasks subtab is initially incomplete. A missing task or failed line needs investigation before the release should be treated as successful.
Check the result
- The saved wave is Released at the intended warehouse.
- The Summary shows the intended selected and released line items, with zero failed line items in this example.
- The Pick Tasks subtab contains Ready work for the same item, quantity, and unit, with no failed task line displayed.
Common questions
Why is a Sales Order or line missing from the wave search?
Check the selected warehouse and transaction type first. Then check the order's approval and fulfillment status, line location, commitment or allocation, holds, Ship Complete setting, item eligibility, and whether the line already belongs to an active wave. The criteria template, role permissions, employee location access, and WMS configuration can also limit the result.
What does “This wave contains partial fulfillments” mean?
The message tells you to inspect the marked candidate's lines and commitment before release. It does not prove that anything has shipped or that the order was previously fulfilled.
Why was SO-8458 left out of the wave?
SO-8458 carried the information icon associated with the warning. The supervisor left it unselected while its line commitment and eligibility remained in question. The icon alone does not tell you the underlying reason.
Does Single Order always create one pick task per selected line?
No. This example produced one task for its selected line, but pick decomposition, item behavior, units, warehouse configuration, and other account settings can change the task breakdown. Check the saved wave instead of assuming a one-to-one result.
What does a Released wave prove?
In this example, Wave 812 was saved as Released with one selected line item, one released line item, and zero failed line items. That means the system accepted the selected 18 EA line for warehouse processing. It does not prove that the goods were picked, staged, packed, fulfilled, or shipped.
What does a Ready pick task prove?
Ready means the system generated picking work that is available for processing. Match the task's item, quantity, and unit to the selected line, and check for any failed task line. Ready does not mean the physical pick or shipment is complete.
