Release a Bulk Picking Wave and Pick It in NetSuite WMS Mobile

Release three sales orders for one item as a Bulk Picking wave, confirm the single consolidated pick task, then enter the combined quantity once on SCM Mobile, choose the lot and stage it.

The quick answer

On Create a Wave, keep the location and Sales Order, choose Search, select the orders, set Picking Type to Bulk Picking, keep the status Released and save. Open the saved wave's Pick Tasks tab to confirm one task carries the combined quantity. On SCM Mobile, choose WMS, the warehouse, Picking and Multi - Order Picking, select the wave and the task, confirm the bin and item, enter the whole quantity once, choose the lot and enter a staging bin. Staging Complete summarizes how the pick was distributed to the orders.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.

Before you start

The account needs NetSuite WMS and the SCM Mobile app, a bin-managed warehouse, approved and committed sales orders at that location that are not already on another wave, enough eligible lot inventory in a bin, and an outbound staging bin. The manager needs access to waves and pick tasks, and the picker needs access to the warehouse and its picking and staging functions. A picker whose employee setup does not allow picking cannot open a pick task, so test with the role your pickers actually use. Before you create the wave, check that the orders have eligible committed quantities, that none of their lines is already on an active wave, and that your search is narrow enough, because a wave search returns a limited number of line items.

The one-task result, the recommended bin and the prompts shown here are what this example produced. They depend on compatible lines (same item, location and unit), the pick strategy, the Apply Pick Decomposition setting and the lot and status rules. Read the Pick Tasks tab of your own wave before you send it to a picker. Page names, buttons and columns can also vary with the SCM Mobile release, so match each screen by its title.

01. Open Create a Wave and search the orders

Open Create a Wave from the WMS outbound area, the Transactions menu or global search. On the Wave Criteria page, Location and Transaction Type are the key criteria, and your form may mark them required. Keep the location, here Eastport Depot, and Sales Order. The filters below only narrow the orders you see, so none is needed here. Select Search.

Location and Transaction Type are the key criteria.

02. Select the orders, choose Bulk Picking and save

The draft Wave lists the candidate orders on its Orders tab. Nothing is released yet. Select the three orders for the same item, SO-30417, SO-30422 and SO-30431; you can also select the box in the column heading to select every order. Summary shows 3 orders, 3 line items and a total quantity of 73. Open Line Items if you need to confirm that each line is the same item.

Set Picking Type to Bulk Picking. Single Order keeps each order's lines separate, so one order can produce several tasks. Multiple Orders consolidates similar items but presents the quantities by order. Bulk Picking consolidates by item, so for ordinary inventory and lot picking the picker enters one consolidated quantity and WMS distributes it back to the orders. Keep Status as Released, because a wave saved as pending release does not appear for pickers until it is released. Review Apply Pick Decomposition before you save. Your account default may preselect it, and it can change how WMS breaks the work into units and tasks, so it is a wave-creation decision. Select Save.

Three orders for the same item are selected.

03. Confirm the one consolidated pick task

The page confirms that the wave was saved. Picking Type reads Bulk Picking and Status reads Released. In Summary, Line Items Released is 3 and Line Items Failed is 0. A saved wave does not prove every selected line was released, so resolve any failures before you continue.

The wave is saved as Bulk Picking and Released.

Open Pick Tasks. One task for GSK-620 gasket kit shows 73 Eaches(1), the recommended bin C3-04 and the status Ready. Three orders became one task. The Summary counts line items rather than tasks, so use this tab to inspect the generated tasks. Ready means the task is available to pick, not that anything has been picked.

One task carries the combined quantity.

04. Open the wave on SCM Mobile

Open SCM Mobile on the picker's device, or from Setup > Custom > Mobile - App where your account offers it. On Select Application, choose WMS, then the warehouse, here Eastport Depot, and Picking on Main Menu. Choose Multi - Order Picking (your release may read Multi-order Picking). In the standard flow there is no separate Bulk Picking tile, and the wave's picking type decides how it behaves. With Show Released Waves on, wave 318 shows 3 orders and 1 task. Select it.

Bulk waves are listed under Multi - Order Picking.

Select Pick Task lists one row: the item, the bin, 3 orders and 73 Eaches(1). Select the task.

One row serves all three orders.

05. Pick the combined quantity

Enter Bin shows the Recommended Bin, C3-04, and the quantity it holds. The recommendation is a suggestion that depends on your pick strategy, bin availability and item settings; for lot-controlled items with expiration dates it can follow first-expired-first-out. Turn on Show all bins to see the other bins that hold the item, select C3-04, and choose Enter Bin.

The recommended bin and the other bins holding the item.

On Enter Item, scan or type the item, or select Item to Pick.

Select the item to continue.

Enter Quantity shows an Expected Quantity of 73 Eaches(1), here the whole quantity of the consolidated task and not a per-order amount. A lot-controlled item also needs a lot and an inventory status. Available Lots lists the lots with their quantity and status.

Expected Quantity is the whole 73.

Enter 73 and keep the status Good. Then choose lot LT-8841 from Available Lots. In the source run, choosing the lot with the quantity already entered moved straight on to Enter Staging Bin. If your release stays on the page, choose Enter Quantity. If a lot holds less than the quantity, enter the quantity for that lot and then another lot, use Other Bin, or repeat the entry. If the bin cannot supply the quantity, Bin Empty records that instead of completing the task. Locations without bins, cartons, tally scan, serialized items and inventory status can add or remove screens.

Choose a lot with enough Good stock.

06. Stage the pick

On Enter Staging Bin, scan or type the outbound staging bin, here OUT-STG-02, and choose Enter Staging Bin. Turn on Show all bins to list the eligible staging bins and their quantities. Which bins appear depends on your picking strategies.

Enter the outbound staging bin.

Staging Complete confirms the staging to OUT-STG-02 and lists the quantity that went to each order: SO-30417 24, SO-30422 18 and SO-30431 31, which add up to the 73 the picker collected once. Its columns can vary by release and setup. Staging moves the work on to packing and shipping. It confirms the mobile staging action and is not an item fulfillment record.

The one pick is distributed to the three orders.

Check the result

  1. The saved wave showed Bulk Picking, Released and one consolidated task of 73.
  2. Staging Complete listed the three orders with 24, 18 and 31, which add up to the quantity picked.
  3. Item fulfillments follow your fulfillment preference (for example per order, per order line or per order in a wave) and can be created in the background, usually at Picked status or Packed when automatic packing applies. Check them on the orders before you treat the work as ready to pack.

Common questions

What is the difference between Single Order, Multiple Orders and Bulk Picking?

Single Order keeps each order's lines separate, so one order can produce several tasks. Multiple Orders and Bulk Picking both consolidate items across orders so the picker collects the full quantity for an item in one trip. With Multiple Orders the mobile flow presents the quantities by order. With Bulk Picking, for ordinary inventory and lot picking, the picker enters one consolidated quantity and WMS distributes the picked quantity back to the orders; order information can still appear in parts of the flow.

Why does my Bulk Picking wave show one pick task for several orders?

Bulk Picking consolidates compatible lines into a task with the combined quantity. Item, location and unit matter, but they are not the whole rule: item type, units, bins, lots or serials, inventory status, the pick strategy and the Apply Pick Decomposition setting can all produce more tasks. Read the Pick Tasks tab of your own wave instead of assuming one.

Where do I pick a Bulk Picking wave on SCM Mobile?

Under Picking, choose Multi - Order Picking (your release may read Multi-order Picking). In the standard flow there is no separate Bulk Picking tile; the wave list shows the orders and tasks of each released wave, and the wave's picking type controls the behavior.

Why does the picker not see which order each unit is for?

That is the point of Bulk Picking: for ordinary inventory and lot picking the picker works with the consolidated quantity and WMS distributes the picked quantity to the orders afterward. Order information can still appear in parts of the flow, such as the staging summary. If the picker needs to be told which orders a quantity is for, use Multiple Orders instead.

What does Bin Empty do?

Bin Empty records that the selected bin cannot supply the remaining quantity. It does not complete the task. A partially picked task normally has to be closed or marked Done before WMS can generate the fulfillment for the picked quantity, unless the Automatically mark partial picks as Done rule does it. The picker can continue from another bin or lot.

When are the item fulfillments created?

Staging does not by itself prove they exist. WMS creates or updates fulfillments according to your fulfillment preference, for example per order, per order line or per order in a wave, and large workloads can run in the background. The fulfillment status is usually Picked, or Packed when automatic packing applies. Each order's fulfillment carries that order's own quantity, not one line for all three. If none appears, check whether the task is fully picked and staged, whether a partial pick was marked Done, and whether any lines failed.

What does Apply Pick Decomposition change?

It changes how WMS breaks order quantities into units and pick tasks, for example by bin or quantity, and its effect depends on item type, units and configuration. It does not make the picker allocate the consolidated quantity to orders. Review it before you save the wave, because it is a wave-creation decision, and check the Pick Tasks tab afterward.

Why can a wave be missing from the picker's list?

A wave saved as Pending Release does not appear for pickers until it is released. Also check that the picker's role and employee setup allow WMS picking at that warehouse, and that the wave's picking type is listed under the Multi - Order Picking entry.
