The quick answer
To create an inventory item in NetSuite, open Lists > Accounting > Items > New and choose Inventory Item. Enter the item name, review required subsidiary and item settings, then save. Verify the saved record type and item name.
Choosing the right item type comes first. This walkthrough creates a basic inventory item and checks the saved record; it does not receive stock or complete every purchasing and accounting setting. The screenshots use sample data and fictional person and operating-company names.
Before you start
Confirm that an inventory item is the right type and search for an existing item to avoid duplicates. Your role needs item-entry access. Know the required subsidiary, costing, accounting, and location settings for your business.
01. Choose Inventory Item
Open Lists > Accounting > Items > New. Select Inventory Item from the item-type choices.
Do not choose a different type just to get past this screen. Inventory, non-inventory, and service items support different uses. Lot-numbered and serialized variants depend on enabled inventory features.
02. Enter the name and review setup
Enter Item Name/Number. The recording uses Carbon Fiber Panel and Parent Company.
Review required settings across the relevant subtabs, including purchasing, sales, and accounting. The example displays Average costing, but the recording does not show a detailed account-configuration pass. Confirm those settings for your own item before using it.
03. Save and verify the item
Click Save. The example returns to Carbon Fiber Panel with the Inventory Item heading and Item successfully Saved confirmation.
Check the record type, name, subsidiary, and costing method. Creating the item does not establish opening stock; review or enter inventory through the appropriate transaction process.
Check the result
- The saved record is the intended item type.
- The name and subsidiary are correct.
- Required costing and accounting settings are ready for use.
The item record is saved. Complete any remaining setup, then use the appropriate purchasing or inventory workflow to record stock.
Common questions
How do I create an Inventory Item in NetSuite?
Open the New Item page, choose Inventory Item if NetSuite first displays item types, and enter the approved Item Name/Number. Review required fields, accounting information, and any subsidiary or location requirements, then select Save. Available fields and required values depend on enabled features, role permissions, and the item form.
Which accounting fields should I review before saving an Inventory Item?
Review the inventory asset, income, and COGS accounts shown on the item’s accounting section. Accept defaults only when appropriate for the item and company. Available accounts and required fields depend on accounting preferences, permissions, enabled features, and, in OneWorld accounts, the selected subsidiary’s access.
How can I confirm that the Inventory Item was created successfully?
After selecting Save, wait for NetSuite to return to the saved record rather than relying on the button click. Confirm the item name or number, record type, saved values, and any status or inactive indicator. A saved record or assigned identifier confirms creation, subject to account-specific processing or approval behavior.
Does saving an Inventory Item add quantity or make it purchasable or sellable?
No. Saving creates the item master record only; the demonstrated save does not receive goods, create quantity on hand, or post financial activity. Pricing can be configured separately on the item. Purchasing and sales availability depend on the item configuration, enabled features, subsidiaries, locations, and account-specific fields. Inventory quantity must be created through separate inventory transactions.
