Pack Serialized Items into a Carton and Pallet in NetSuite

Take a fully picked serialized order from Not Started to one closed carton on a pallet in NetSuite Ship Central.

The quick answer

Sales order SO-91047 is fully picked at 2/2, but packing is still Not Started. Open it in Ship Central, put both serialized units into carton CTN-604, enter the carton weight and size, and place the closed carton on pallet PLT-204. Complete packing only after the pallet summary matches the expected pallet and carton count; this replay expects one carton on one pallet. The order then leaves this queue under its current filters, but that does not confirm shipment.

The screenshots show sample data. Person and operating-company names are fictional. Use your own records and values when following the steps.

Before you start

You need Ship Central or the relevant WMS packing functionality, access to the warehouse, bin, sales order, and fulfillment, and a sales order whose items have already been picked into an outbound staging bin. Confirm that the fulfillment has the carrier, shipping method, and routing data required by your account; those fields can affect which orders appear. The two serialized units in this example must already have eligible inventory detail on the picked fulfillment. If your process uses predefined carton or pallet sizes, scales, printers, or integrations, configure those before packing. Pallet packing also requires the Enable pallet packing rule.

In this synthetic replay, the process opens from Mobile Emulator > Mobile Screen. An account's launcher and entry path depend on its enabled features, role, device, and release.

01. Select the packing order

From Select Application, choose Ship Central, then the warehouse. On the Main Menu, choose PACKING, then SALES ORDER, and tap the outbound staging bin on Select Bin. On the SALES ORDER queue, find SO-91047 and establish the starting state: Fully Picked, 2/2, and Not Started. Tick that row and choose Enter Order. A different warehouse, bin, or PICK STATUS: Exclude Partially Picked filter can change which orders appear.

SO-91047 is fully picked at 2/2, but packing is still Not Started.

02. Pack the serialized items

On PACK ITEMS INTO CARTONS, select Add Carton, use the generated carton name, or edit it if the account permits manual carton numbering, and confirm. Under Items to Pack, choose Pack for the item. Enter the quantity shown for the picked line, two base units in this example, and follow the displayed unit-of-measure format. In the serial dialog, scan each serial or switch on Show All Serial Numbers and tick one row per unit. The serial confirmation remains unavailable, or validation prevents completion, until the required quantity of eligible serial numbers is entered or selected. Confirm the item then shows under Items Packed for the selected carton.

Both units sit under Items Packed for CTN-604 and Items to Pack is empty.

03. Close the carton

Select Pack Carton. Enter the required CARTON WEIGHT and UNIT. Select a configured CARTON SIZE, or enter custom dimensions when the account requires them; whether size and dimensions are mandatory depends on the packing configuration. Choose Pack Carton to close the carton. After that action, the footer offers Open Carton if you need to correct it and Next to continue. In this replay, Save & Close leaves the packing session unfinished so it can be resumed. Confirm your account's persistence rules before relying on it.

Enter the weight and unit, choose the carton size, then Pack Carton closes the carton.

04. Pack the carton on a pallet

Select Next to reach the Packing Summary, which lists each closed carton with its size and weight. Choose Add To Pallet, enter the pallet name, pick its PALLET SIZE, and confirm with Add Pallet. On Pack Cartons on Pallets, select Pack beside the carton and confirm it moves from CARTONS TO PACK to PACKED CARTONS under the pallet.

CTN-604 now sits under PACKED CARTONS for PLT-204.

05. Review and complete packing

Select Next. The Packed Sales Order Pallet Summary lists each pallet with its displayed size value and # OF PACK CARTONS for the order. Match it to the physical pallet, then choose Complete Packing. In this replay, SO-91047 leaves the displayed SALES ORDER queue under the current warehouse, bin, status, and filter settings. Verify the saved packing or fulfillment status separately. Go To Staging and Print Pallet List are separate branches that depend on your rules and printers.

Check the pallet name, size, and packed-carton count before Complete Packing.
After Complete Packing, SO-91047 is no longer visible under this queue's current filters; verify its saved status separately.

Check the result

  1. The packed quantity under Items Packed matches the number of serial numbers you selected.
  2. The pallet summary lists the pallet with the expected size and packed-carton count.
  3. The completed order no longer appears in the SALES ORDER queue.
  4. No shipping conclusion is drawn until fulfillment status, label or tracking details, and carrier action are checked separately.

Carton or pallet completion does not imply that labels, packing slips, pallet lists, bills of lading, or tracking were produced. Those outputs depend on separate printing, shipping, and integration settings.

Common questions

Why does SO-91047 appear ready to pack?

The queue shows Fully Picked 2/2, while Not Started shows that packing has not begun. This is the starting state for the workflow, not proof that the order has already been packed or shipped.

Why does Ship Central ask for a serial number for every unit?

Serialized inventory is tracked by individual identifier. Enter or select one eligible serial number for each packed unit so the serial count matches the quantity. If an expected serial is missing, check the fulfillment's inventory detail instead of selecting an unrelated serial.

What is the difference between Save & Close and Pack Carton?

Save & Close pauses an unfinished packing session so it can be resumed. Pack Carton closes the selected carton after its contents and required weight are complete. Account customizations can change the labels, but an unfinished save should not be treated as a closed carton.

Does Complete Packing ship the sales order?

No. It records packing completion and returns to the packing queue; it does not necessarily change the fulfillment to Shipped. Shipping actions, carrier labels, tracking numbers, and carrier updates depend on separate shipping, printing, and integration settings, including the Go to Shipping and Mark as Shipped actions some accounts expose on the Packing Summary.

Why is an eligible order missing from the packing queue?

Confirm the fulfillment is eligible and its items are picked, the required carrier, shipping-method, and routing data is present, and the selected location or bin holds the picked inventory. Check whether PICK STATUS: Exclude Partially Picked hides it, another operator already started the packing session, or the order was packed, staged, or completed elsewhere. Exact queue rules vary by configuration.

Will every account show the same packing fields and controls?

No. Entry paths, controls, filters, printing options, scale integration, carton numbering, dimensions, and pallet rules vary by account. Follow the controls and validation shown by your configured Ship Central workflow.
