The quick answer
Open the item supply plan from Item Supply Plans and go to Planning Message. Most rows are code 120, Quantity On Hand is Above Safety Stock, which is informational. Look for rows that carry an Order and a Reschedule Date: code 130, Late Purchase Order, means a purchase order was not fully received before its receipt date, and a code 220 row with the message Reschedule Out suggests moving an order later. Reading the plan changes nothing. Act on the purchase order itself, then recalculate the plan.

Before you start
This is classic Demand Planning, not the MRP Planning Workbench. It needs an item supply plan that has already been generated for the item and location. If the Planning Message subtab is empty, generate the plan first. Which messages appear depends on the item's replenishment method, safety stock, lead time, time fences and demand source, so your plan will differ from this example.
01. Open the item supply plan
Go to Demand Planning > Item Supply Plans. The menu name depends on your role and features. In the list, choose View for the plan you want. Here it is the plan for Ridge Camp Lantern at Reno Warehouse.
02. Read the Orders subtab
The Orders subtab lists the supply the planning run counted. Here PO-4398 is for 12 with a receipt date of 09/03/2026, and PO-4401 is for 20 with a receipt date of 10/16/2026. Note the order numbers and dates before you read the messages, because the messages refer to them.
03. Find the late purchase order
Open Planning Message. The first row is code 130, Late Purchase Order, for PO-4398, quantity 12. The order was not fully received by its 09/03/2026 receipt date. The Reschedule Date, 10/15/2026, comes from the planning calculation, so do not treat it as the vendor's new arrival date. Check the vendor and receipt status, then decide whether to expedite, split or revise the order. The rows below it are code 120 and only say the projected balance is above safety stock.
04. Find the reschedule message
Further down, the 10/16/2026 row is code 220, Reschedule Out, for PO-4401, quantity 20, with a reschedule date of 10/21/2026. The plan suggests moving the order from its current date to the reschedule date because it is not needed on the original date. You can move it if that suits you and the vendor. Read the Message text first, because it tells you the direction: a Reschedule In row would point the other way, and the same code can also carry a cancel recommendation.
Check the result
- You can name the rows that carry an order and a reschedule date.
- The late purchase order and the reschedule row are matched to orders on the Orders subtab.
- Nothing was edited, so no purchase order or plan changed.
Common questions
What does code 120 mean?
Code 120, Quantity On Hand is Above Safety Stock, means the projected balance, including supply already counted, stays above the safety stock level. It is usually informational and does not ask you to buy more.
What does Late Purchase Order mean?
The purchase order was not fully received before its receipt date. The message does not tell you what to do, so look at the order named in the row: confirm the vendor's date, whether it has been partly received, and whether to expedite, split, or revise its date or quantity. The row's Reschedule Date comes from the planning calculation and is not necessarily the vendor's new arrival date.
What is the difference between Reschedule Out and Reschedule In?
Reschedule Out suggests moving an order later because it is not needed on its current date. Reschedule In points the other way: demand occurs before the scheduled supply, so the order should move earlier. The same code can also carry a cancel recommendation, so read the message text first and compare the Date with the Reschedule Date. The displayed message matters more than the numeric code.
What other messages can a supply plan show?
Depending on the item and setup, the plan can also recommend, among other things, messages such as quantity on hand below safety stock or below zero, late work orders, and recommendations to place a new purchase, work or transfer order, or to cancel supply that demand no longer needs.
What is the Orders subtab for?
It lists the supply the plan counted: the order and receipt dates, the type and the quantity. It is the detail behind the calculation, not a list you maintain by hand, and the Order column on a message names the transaction it applies to.
I changed a purchase order. Why are the messages the same?
The item supply plan is a snapshot of the last calculation. Editing, receiving or rescheduling a purchase order does not update it. Generate the item supply plan again, then reopen it and check that the messages changed.
